Another week has flown by, bringing a heap of updates on our beloved strategy and war games. Real-Time Strategy (RTS) or Turn-Based Strategy.
Become a Hollywood Superstar With Hollywood Animal
Among the management simulation games I’m excited about in 2025, one that’s been long-awaited has finally been released, and it seems to be a success. After spending quite some time with Hollywood Animal during the last Steam Festival, I was captivated by its complexity and the unique twist it offers – exploring the grittier aspects of Hollywood, where you find yourself in the role of both a producer and a figure of underworld influence.
Commandos: Origins Stumbles On Release Day
Fight The Cold War With Armored Brigade 2 On Steam
Discussing sequels that are definitely worth your investment, Armored Brigade 2 has recently been launched on Steam by Slitherine. This real-time strategy war game, set during the Cold War era, builds upon the successful foundation of its predecessor and introduces a significant third dimension. I had the chance to review this game when it was initially released at the Slitherine store a few months ago.
Nordhold Is An Hex Tower Defense Game
Based on what I’ve seen on Steam – the intriguing trailer and overwhelmingly positive user reviews – it seems like Nordhold could be an exciting game! I’ve added it to my wishlist as a precaution, so you may also want to consider doing the same for potential future enjoyment.
Burden Of Command Out After 8 Years In Development
Indeed, I never imagined I’d live to see the release of Burden of Command. Despite its lengthy development period, I’m grateful it came to fruition since, in my opinion, it’s an immediate classic. The game performs admirably well enough for us to continue receiving story DLC. I rated it a perfect 10/10 and declared it as my new favorite World War II game. You can find out why here.
Wargame Design Studio Game of the Week
This week, enthusiasts of World War II have been particularly delighted, as I’ve given a glowing review to “Burden of Command”. However, if you aspire to be a General rather than a Captain, Wargame Design Studio’s “Spring Awakening ’45” might be more suited to your interests. This strategy game focuses on the last significant German offensive against the Soviets during World War II. It offers 85 playable scenarios for both sides, along with meticulously detailed Orders of Battle and maps.
Battle for Middle Earth Gets New Lease On Life With Mods
Initially launched in 2012, the Middle-Earth Extended Edition mod continues to receive updates even after a span of 13 years. The latest update has introduced new playable maps, incorporated fresh features, fine-tuned and enhanced the AI, and made numerous balance adjustments and bug corrections. If you’re interested in revisiting this timeless classic with one of its more comprehensive mods, you can do so with the 1.0 version of the mod.
Critical Moves Disagree On Which Is Better: Real-Time or Turn-Based Strategy Games?
If you’re a fan of the Critical Moves Podcast, you might recognize me as Chad who delves deep into various strategy games. In contrast, my less-than-knowledgeable co-hosts seem to prefer Real-Time Strategy (RTS) games exclusively. If you find yourself disagreeing with them (as I suspect you do), feel free to express your thoughts by leaving a comment and letting them know that their opinions aren’t universally accepted.
Warside Looks Cute
If you recall enjoying Advance Wars on your Gameboy, you’ll surely be intrigued by Warside, a game that carries on the legacy of the classic series with a remarkably similar gameplay formula. Remarkably, it appears to be the same game in a new guise. Mark your calendars for April 14, 2025, as this exciting title is set to launch!
Sherman Commander Partners Up With Daedalic Entertainment
The Sherman Commander appears set to break free from development as an exceptionally distinct perspective on commanding World War II tanks. It emphasizes a more authentic experience, with armor and infantry collaborating to secure victory. Recently, it was announced that Daedalic Entertainment will be the game’s publisher, potentially enabling its release in 2026. This could mean players might engage in battles reminiscent of Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, and the Battle of Aachen.
Slitherine Showcases Stormbinders
Slitherine recently unveiled their latest game, Stormbinders, and last Thursday, they granted us a sneak peek at this game that appears to be inspired by the classic series, Heroes of Might and Magic.
Field of Glory: Kingdoms Has A Date For DLC
Medieval, will significantly enlarge the game map to encompass parts of Asia and Africa. This expansion brings novel mechanics, fresh civilizations, various buildings, unique perks, and new scenarios, offering a wealth of new content. The DLC is scheduled for release on May 15th, 2025.
Victory At Sea Atlantic Gets Mod Support
Enthusiasts of the naval strategy game Victory at Sea: Atlantic will find joy in the news that the game now includes Steam Workshop integration, simplifying the process of sharing and discovering mods! This latest update also introduces some new units, like the USS Alabama, HMS Repulse, and the Junkers Ju 88 dive bomber.
Battlefield Commander WWII Out Now
I’m unsure about Battlefield Commander WWII, as it was recently released on Steam Early Access with minimal attention and its screenshots aren’t very persuasive. I struggled to find information about it online too. However, the 3D models appear to be well-designed at least.
Xenonauts 2 Reaches A New Milestone
As a hardcore gamer, I’ve just dived into the latest update for Xenonauts 2 – hands down the best XCOM clone out there! This update is massive, packing in a bunch of fresh Geoscape mechanics that beef up the strategic gameplay. It’s not just about strategy though; it’s also loaded with plenty of new end-game content to keep me hooked. New alien types, a sleek new Battlship UFO, and three intriguing plot missions have been added! The icing on the cake? I can now wrap up the campaign by unlocking Operation Endgame! Game on!
