Strategy and Wargaming News – 12 October 2025 – Steam Next Fest, Paradox Kills Millenia, WDS Partners With Burden of Command, And So Much more!

What’s New In Strategy and Wargames?

Man, it feels like there’s always a huge game release happening! This time it’s the new Battlefield, and honestly, after the last couple of entries didn’t quite hit the mark, it seems like they’ve really turned things around. I personally didn’t fall in love with it, but I think that says more about my changing tastes in shooters than anything about the game itself. Anyway, enough about that – let’s get into what’s been happening in the world of strategy and wargames, starting with the awesome Steam Next Fest!

Steam Next Fest Arrives Tomorrow!

Steam Next Fest starts tomorrow, October 13th, and runs through October 20th. It’s a great chance to try out demos of upcoming games. Hundreds of new demos will be available, letting players get an early look at exciting strategy titles like Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era and MENACE – both of which I’ve already previewed for Firaxis and found very impressive.

Wargame Design Studio Partners with Burden of Command

Big news for fans of Wargame Design Studio and Burden of Command! Wargame Design Studio has acquired Burden of Command’s 3D terrain graphics to improve and standardize the visuals in their games. They’ve also purchased 1,100 3D models to use as a foundation for updating their unit graphics. This sets the stage for a major visual upgrade across the Wargame Design Studio series.

I’m thrilled to hear this news! It’s great to see the leading wargaming company focusing on improving the graphics of their games to appeal to more players. I’ve long believed that even the most realistic wargame needs good presentation to reach a wider audience, and this is a huge step forward. It’s smart business, and WDS clearly recognizes that. They successfully tested this approach with ‘Squad Battles: Falklands,’ and the results are impressive – they’ve added a new level of 3D zoom. Check it out!

When will we see a game that combines the compelling story and RPG elements of ‘Burden of Command’ with the detailed combat system found in games from Wargame Design Studio?

Master of Command Comes Out This Month

I recently got a preview copy of the upcoming strategy game, Master of Command, from The Armchair Historian, and I’m excited to share my thoughts soon. While it’s not the most realistic strategy game out there, it’s a really fun mix of roguelike elements, character progression, and quick, tactical battles. It’s perfect for a mental workout without being overly complicated. You can even try a demo yourself!

Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era Delayed

I was right in my initial assessment of Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era – it was missing some user interface elements, tooltips, and animations. The developers are planning to address these issues with further playtesting and redesigns of some units, which is great news! I’m really happy to see Ubisoft and Hooded Horse taking the time to polish the game, even if it means a short delay. And to ease any disappointment, a demo is available to play now.

Paradox Pulls The Plug On Millenia

Well, it’s official – Paradox has stopped developing Millennia. They announced it on Steam, saying this latest patch is the last one, and while they’ll still offer support, they’re stepping away from the community side of things. Honestly, as a fan, it’s pretty disappointing. A lot of us are feeling a mix of sadness and frustration, because it feels like this is a pattern with Paradox – they launch a game that isn’t quite finished and then just… leave it. It kind of feels like that skull in the Millennia logo was a warning all along!
