Greetings everyone! After being swamped with work these past few months, I’m finally back to my usual routine. Our old home was relocated, and a new one required renovation; on top of that, freelance projects kept piling up. However, I managed to plan my Steam Sale list ahead, and let me tell you, it was quite the success this year! In fact, I received nearly half a million visits to Firaxis Games in just June – an unexpected turnout. Enough about me, though; let’s get into the latest strategy and wargame news for July 2025.
Slitherine Next Announces New Wargame
At the Slitherine Next event last Thursday, the game Battleplan was introduced, piquing my interest significantly. If you’ve played Hearts of Iron IV, you might recognize the concept: draw your frontline and battle plans, then let the AI execute them in real-time. It seems like a unique blend of command, detailed rosters, accurate geography, and companies as the fundamental game unit – something I haven’t come across outside of Wargame Design Studios titles. I’m eager to see how it develops, so I’ll be monitoring its progress until release. Definitely expect a review from me!
New Spanish Civil War Game
A post on Matrix Games forum proposes a job for a game tester, revealing an upcoming, undisclosed title that will resemble the “layout” of the War in the Pacific strategy game, but tailored for the Spanish Civil War instead. Though the prospect of a Spanish Civil War strategy game is intriguing, I’m unsure about how a game focusing on Strike Carrier operations would translate effectively to the Spanish Civil War, given the minimal air force component during that conflict compared to the Pacific War. Despite this, I’m eager to discover how they will adapt the underlying structure for this new project.
Master of Command Is Looking Good
Armchair History Interactive’s development team has unveiled the upcoming historical strategy title they are working on – dubbed “Master of Command.
After repeatedly watching its preview, there are aspects that have me genuinely thrilled, while others leave me uncertain about their quality. Let’s focus on the bright side first: The spectacular 3D battles reminiscent of Total War, the intricate and enjoyable army customization, and the commitment to historical accuracy.
Regarding the concept of a campaign with procedural elements, I’m still hesitant. While I understand the appeal of unpredictability, reflecting the uncertainties of war, I question whether that’s what most gamers seeking an experience like this desire. Additionally, I have reservations about the idea of constructing an army from scratch each time I play. I worry that the roguelike aspect could detract from the game’s primary attraction, which appears to be its 3D battles. I fear it might make the game too swift or superficial for my personal taste. However, I truly hope I’m mistaken, as this seems like the kind of game I’d adore if executed effectively.
Broken Arrow DLC Confirmed + Cheating Trouble
Although specific details about the forthcoming DLC for one of the top real-time strategy games released recently are scant, a subtle hint on the Steam page update suggests they’re intending to enrich the game by adding new factions and additional DLCs.
Despite an initial triumph, Broken Arrow has encountered numerous challenges. For instance, there’s no skirmish mode for testing decks and missing save features in single-player games, which indicates ongoing turmoil. The latest issue seems to be a surge of cheaters exploiting Cheat Engine to manipulate the game, with some players reporting endless units and instant unit elimination. Although developers have threatened a ban of 2000 players, this action hasn’t effectively curbed those who appreciate Broken Arrow’s competitive multiplayer experience.
Combat Mission 3 Is Being Made
I had a note saved about the ongoing development of Combat Mission 3, which I came across after doing some online research. On a forum post, it was mentioned that Battlefront has been working diligently on CM3 for quite some time now. This new game engine is being designed based on the principles of both Combat Mission 1 and 2, while also leveraging Unity’s advanced features. Since the early stages of CM3 development, this has been the aim, and Slitherine is fully aware of what makes Combat Mission unique and special.
Although this confirmation serves as an exciting indication of future developments, coupled with the announcement of a stronger development crew, we’re yet to have a definite schedule. What we do know is that the initial game in the CM3 series will either focus on World War II or contemporary settings.
