As a seasoned strategist with a heart full of battles won and lost, I can hardly contain my excitement as I delve into this week’s dose of gaming news! From the anticipated Hearts of Iron 4 DLC to the emerging Stellaris competitor, Beyond Astra, there’s a veritable feast for the strategic palate here.
This week, we bring you another roundup of the top strategy gaming news from across the web! There’s exciting news about a new DLC for Hearts of Iron 4, an upcoming competitor to Stellaris, the Battle of Britain is almost here, Broken Arrow is launching open beta, and MicroProse is set to release a game reminiscent of Red Alert 2.
By the way, I divided this extensive news piece into two sections, so don’t miss out on either one. And for fans of the American Civil War, get ready for an engaging read featuring top-rated American Civil War video games soon.
Giveaway Winners Have Gotten Their Games
Firaxis is thrilled to announce that they’ve surpassed 1 million views on their content, and the winners are you all! A collaboration between Hooded Horse, Slitherine, Matrix, Wargame Design Studio, and Microprose resulted in giving away 50 game codes. Keep an eye on your emails to see if you were among the lucky recipients of these prizes.
I’m equally delighted by the encouraging messages I got from many of you. They truly mean a great deal, so I want to express my gratitude for them.
Hearts of Iron 4 New DLC
Hearts of Iron IV unveiled the Götterdämmerung expansion, an addition that might pique your interest if you know something about Germany. This new downloadable content (DLC) will overhaul the focus trees for Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Belgium. It allows players to construct unique projects and develop sophisticated weaponry. Additionally, a new type of operation called Raids has been introduced. The AI’s offensive abilities are also being improved in this update.
Broken Arrow Open Beta
The highly-anticipated game I’ve been eagerly waiting for, initially scheduled for 2024 but now set for 2025, will start its open beta phase for multiplayer from November 12th. If you haven’t heard, Broken Arrow is a real-time strategy title reminiscent of Eugen System’s “wargame” series, but with a unique twist – it slows down the pace, emphasizing infantry and creating an intense focus on urban combat. Plus, it sets the action in contemporary times.
Battlefall: State of Conflict Announced
Microprose continues to expand its collection with fresh titles, the latest one being Battlefall: State of Conflict in the real-time strategy genre. Known as a “thrilling” game, it features various factions clashing over the remnants of Earth. While this sounds great, it reminds me of Red Alert 2, and I’m all for it! I can only hope they improve the explosion effects since they currently seem misplaced. If you’re interested, there’s a demo available to test it out.
Beyond Astra Is a Stellaris Competitor
This one bumped into me while I was perusing the internet for news. Being developed by Nebule Games, Beyond Astra is a real-time 4X sci-fi strategy game very much in the vein of Stellaris. This one also has a demo available on Steam.
Scramble: Battle of Britain Entering Early Access
An under-the-radar email from Slitherine announces that they’re planning to launch their groundbreaking game, Scramble: Battle of Britain, in Early Access on October 29th. This move might seem unusual for a company like Slitherine, but they justify it by stating that Scramble: Battle of Britain is introducing a revolutionary gameplay system, and they believe that player feedback will significantly improve the game. You can try out the demo of Scramble: Battle of Britain on Steam now.
Realpolitiks 3: Earth and Beyond Announced
I must confess to having never booted up a Realpolitiks game. There’s no particular reason for this, I just never got around to playing them, so I have no idea if they’re good or not, but if this grand strategy is going into their third iteration, it has to mean something. The big deal this time around with Real Politiks 3 is that the game isn’t limited to the Earth, and you can, in fact, expand your nation all across the Solar System. This sounds like a ridiculous and interesting premise, so let’s see how this one turns out.
