Hi strategy game fans! Here’s a roundup of the latest news in the gaming world. Lots is happening, with big releases on the horizon and plenty of new games being announced.
This is the final Firaxis News update for September. I’m going on vacation for two weeks, but don’t worry – I’ve already scheduled regular articles to be published on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. That means you’ll still get new content, though the very latest news will have to wait until the first week of October.
Endless Legend 2 Coming On Early Access On September 22nd
Dinolords Looks Stupid Fun
I recently discovered Dinolords while researching my list of the 50 best strategy games for 2025, but hadn’t written about it yet. It’s a real-time strategy game similar to Age of Empires II, featuring medieval castles and knights – with the added twist of dinosaurs! The game is being created by Northplay and published by Ghost Ship Games, who are known for the popular co-op game, Deep Rock Galactic.
The Bloody 100th First Dev Blog
Many players, including myself, had assumed the development of B-17 Flying Fortress: The Bloody 100th had been abandoned. However, MicroProse recently released a developer blog to address those concerns and explain what sets this game apart. Honestly, it sounds like a solid WWII flight simulator – you’ll manage your crew and plane, focus on critical tasks during battles, try to keep everyone alive, and work to complete your objectives, with a few extra touches. And that’s great news!
It’s strange, but MicroProse announced a Kickstarter for a board game based on a game that hasn’t even been created yet, as you can see in the video. Predictably, the reaction online is mostly criticism about how absurd and poorly timed the announcement is. I generally try to be optimistic, but MicroProse, whoever is handling your marketing needs a serious rethink – you’re damaging the good relationship you’ve built with your fans.
MENACE Demo Coming Soon
The upcoming turn-based strategy game, MENACE, is getting closer to a public demo. The developers are currently working hard to squash bugs, fine-tune the game’s difficulty, and thoroughly test everything before releasing it. Despite the work still needed, the game is still on track for a 2025 release, which is encouraging!
Sins of a Solar Empire II Gets New Reinforcements
Sins of a Solar Empire II, considered the top real-time strategy game of 2024, continues to expand with new updates and downloadable content. The newest addition introduces powerful command ships for each of the game’s three races – the Terran Hanseatic Empire (TEC), the Vasari, and the Advent – and also includes three unique ways for each faction to achieve victory.
- Vasari – The Departure: Build massive ark ships and escape the sector through a star.
- Advent – Mass Conversion: Use your command ship dreadnoughts to transform entire star systems into loyal territory in sweeping waves.
- Trader Emergency Coalition – Super Novalith Offensive: Construct an ultimate Novalith cannon capable of obliterating planets to force peace through sheer destructive power.
Football Manager 2026 Fails To Impress
Okay, so I don’t usually cover Football Manager here, but it *is* a strategy game at heart, and I’m trying to bring you guys more variety! The new version, Football Manager 2026, comes out November 4th, and Sports Interactive just showed off some gameplay. Honestly, the reaction in the YouTube comments is… intense. It’s a lot of people saying that after five years of work, it doesn’t *look* that different from the last game. I figured I’d let you all check it out and decide for yourselves!
