An Amazing Way To Start November 2025 With These Firaxis News
2025 has been a fantastic year for video games, particularly for fans of strategy titles, and it’s finishing strong! Europa Universalis V is launching in just a few days, and we’re also getting a new expansion for Unity of Command II, taking the classic wargame back to the Western Front. The Wargame Design Studio Squad Battles series is also getting some cool visual improvements. That’s just a taste of what’s happening – welcome to this week’s Firaxis News! I’m your host, Sir Nuno, and I’m glad you’re here.
Europa Universalis 5 Reviews Are Out, And The Critics Are Loving It
Paradox Interactive has faced significant challenges recently. The launch of Cities: Skylines II was widely considered a failure, and Victoria 3 didn’t live up to expectations despite strong initial interest. They also cancelled Life by You, a promising simulation game. Updates on Prison Architect 2 have been absent, and fans are unhappy with the direction of the Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 sequel.
It’s looking good for Paradox Interactive’s 2025 performance, largely depending on how well Europa Universalis 5 does. Early signs are very positive, with strong reviews – IGN gave it an 8/10, Rock Paper Shotgun called it a game you can play forever, and both Firaxis and PC Gamer scored it 8.7 and 87 respectively. Reviewers consistently highlight the game’s impressive depth, innovative population systems, and overall massive scale.
Unity of Command 2 Gets A New Expansion
A fantastic wargame for newcomers, Unity of Command 2, is receiving a large expansion in 2025. This new content will focus on the Battle of the Bulge, Germany’s final major attack in Western Europe. Get ready to manage logistics and strategy in the Ardennes!
This downloadable content (DLC) puts you in charge of a somewhat mischievous Austrian painter trying to turn the tide for the Reich. Your goal is to split the Allied forces in the Ardennes and capture the port of Antwerp. The game features 14 scenarios total: 7 based on the historical Ardennes campaign and the final battles in the East, and 7 that explore wild alternate history possibilities. New units, specialized troops, and maps are also included.
Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord Goes Seaborne with War Sails
I’m a big fan of the Mount & Blade series, and even though Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord isn’t strictly a strategy game, I wanted to share the exciting news about its new ‘War Sails’ DLC. This expansion adds the Nords (inspired by Vikings) and a brand new northern region to the game world. The biggest addition is a completely revamped naval combat system, aiming for realism with features like wind and water physics, ship ramming, and boarding actions – all based on historical medieval sea battles. The trailer looks incredible, and I’m really looking forward to trying it out!
Master of Command Is A Success With Players
Master of Command is receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam, with 91% of players giving it a ‘Very Positive’ rating. This new game from The Armchair Historian (who previously made Fire & Maneuver, a game I didn’t enjoy) successfully blends real-time strategy, grand strategy, and roguelike elements. Players especially appreciate how much replay value the game offers for its price, along with the engaging real-time battles. If you’re looking for a confirmation that this game is excellent, check out my full review!
Farthest Frontier Launches Its 1.0 Version
I haven’t spent as much time with Farthest Frontier as I should have. It’s a really beautiful and well-sounding medieval city-building game, and it’s clearly been successful – almost 10,000 players have given it positive reviews during its time in Early Access. The full version (1.0) launched on Steam on October 23rd.
