What’s New In Strategy and Wargames?
As the Steam Autumn Sale winds down, let’s take a look at the latest news in Strategy and Wargames. This week saw a major event: EA was acquired by a Saudi investment fund for a staggering $55 billion. Also, the price of Game Pass increased by 50 percent. While I’m not overly concerned about the EA acquisition-as long as they leave my favorite, STAR WARS Zero Company, untouched-this Game Pass price increase feels like just the start of a worrying trend in the gaming industry-what some are calling gaming enshitification.
Endless Legend 2 Out In Steam’s Early Access Program
It’s been 11 years since the original Endless Legend, and AMPLITUDE Studios’ new game is now available in Steam’s Early Access. The initial reaction has been very positive – much like my own when I got a preview. Endless Legend 2 feels very similar to the first game, but with improved visuals and added features. The standout new mechanic is the terraforming system, which lets you create and block pathways, and can really disrupt your strategies. It’s a really neat addition! Some Steam reviews mention that the user interface (UI) feels a little cluttered. While playing the demo, I didn’t find the UI to be a major issue, but I’ll be sure to address this in a more detailed review with a scorecard.
Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era Demo
A demo for the latest installment in the Heroes of Might and Magic series is expected to be released soon, probably during the Steam Next Fest beginning on October 13th. I’ve had a chance to play the demo and was really impressed. The Olden Era specifically brought back a lot of nostalgia, reminding me of playing the original Heroes of Might and Magic on my Gameboy Color when I was younger.
Play Mechanicus 2 Right Now
That’s right, the demo for the eagerly awaited turn-based strategy game, Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus 2, is now available, and you can play it today! Just visit Steam and download it. If it’s as good as the first game, we’ll have plenty to enjoy for the next year. MENACE is looking fantastic, Heroes is also great, and we’re still excited to try the upcoming XCOM-like, Star Wars Company. With Mechanicus 2 added to the mix, 2026 is already shaping up to be an amazing year!
Mars Tactics Has a Release Window Trailer?
I’m familiar with teasers, gameplay videos, and even cinematic trailers, but a trailer just to announce a release window feels new! The turn-based strategy game, taking place on Mars and published by Hooded Horse, is now scheduled for release in May 2026. It’s a little disappointing, as I really enjoyed the demo of Mars Tactics when I played it. However, I’d much prefer the game be polished and great when it arrives, rather than rushing out an unfinished product.
Master of Command Has a Release Date
The Armchair Historian’s new game, Master of Command, is launching on October 27th as part of Steam Next Fest. A free demo will be available so players can try it out before buying. Personally, I’m really hoping Master of Command becomes something great, though I’m a little unsure about how its roguelike elements will be received by players interested in historical accuracy. I enjoy roguelike games myself, so I think I’ll like it, and I’m particularly excited that it focuses on a relatively unknown period of military history. Let’s see how it goes and hope for the best!
