Strategy and Wargaming News – Scourge of War; Angola 86; Headquarters World War 2 – Market Garden

As a seasoned gamer with decades of battlefield experience under my belt, I can confidently say that this week has been nothing short of a tactical triumph! The release of Angola ’86 on Steam takes me back to the days of Vietnam ’65 and Afghanistan ’11, where the heart and minds of the populace were as important as the territory itself. Every Single Soldier’s niche games are always a delight for those who appreciate the intricacies of counter-insurgency warfare.

September started out great! Age of Mythology: Retold is an amazingly faithful recreation of the original 2002 game that plays like a charm. Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 is out now, and people are having a blast with it. Concord went down in flames, teaching Sony a lesson that designing games and characters by committee can lead to over 100 million dollar loss. There’s a lot to go over this week, from new games to big updates, so let’s get started!

Angola 86 Is Out Now On Steam

Each individual soldier has unveiled a fresh title called “Angola ’86,” which offers an in-depth look at the South African Border War. In this game, you’ll assume the role of a commander for the South African Defense Force and engage in a counter-insurgency (COIN) conflict to safeguard the border with Angola.

It appears that Angola ’86, similar to previous games from Every Single Soldier such as Vietnam ’65 and Afghanistan ’11, will follow a unique formula. Unlike other games where the primary goal is simply to destroy the enemy, this game also emphasizes on securing the region, training local forces, and building trust among the local population. This approach sets Every Single Soldier’s games apart and might appeal to those who prefer influencing the hearts and minds of people rather than territorial conquest.

Each soldier is involved in creating not just Rhodesia ’72 and Vietnam ’66, but also these titles are building upon their established formulas to explore other conflicts. The game Angola ’86 retails for $12.99 | 12,79€ | £10.99.

Slitherine’s fresh perspective on World War II, titled “Headquarters: World War 2,” has begun unveiling its initial expansion focusing on the Market Garden Operation. The creators of the game have revealed that this expansion will feature 8 missions, with the British campaign being one of them.

Journey to Valkenswaard

In contrast to many other games, Headquarters: World War 2 – Market Garden campaign deviates from the usual focus on the paratroopers that were dropped behind enemy lines. Instead, it centers around the British infantry forces who were assigned the mission of reaching these troops.

Kaiserpunk Delayed To 2025

The eagerly awaited strategy game Kaiserpunk, set for release in 2024, is being pushed back from the third quarter to the first quarter of 2025, specifically on February 27th. In an unusual decision that’s not common nowadays, the development team has opted to skip the Early Access phase as they feel it wouldn’t accurately represent the complete vision of Kaiserpunk.

I’d like to give them praise for their honesty and dedication to their work, as well as their aim to provide an outstanding experience. However, I must admit, I’m feeling quite apprehensive about the final outcome due to the unique blend of genres in the game. While this could potentially be a strong selling point, there’s also the risk that it might stretch the team’s resources too thin and dilute their focus.

Burden of Command Moral and Leadership

Is it possible that the “Burden of Command” will be included in the Firaxis Guide to Computer Wargaming at some point in the future? The estimated release date for “Burden of Command” is between December and February.

Starship Troopers: Terran Command Free Challenge Missions

As a gamer, I’m super pumped about the new challenges coming with the Urban Onslaught DLC for Starship Troopers: Terran Command! In the first mission, I’ll be on the frontlines defending the city of Mahanagar from those pesky Bugs. The second one has me leading my troops to retake control of the Mahanagar power plant that the Bugs have been eyeing for some reason. Can’t wait to get back into the game and save the day!

Starship Troopers: Terran Command is currently discounted by 40%, bringing the price down to just $17.99, €17.39, or £14.99.

Professional Wargaming Documentary

At the corner of Tally-Ho, Tim Stone recently came across an intriguing documentary on YouTube about Wargaming. While I found its tone a tad didactic, it’s skillfully produced and definitely worth checking out if you’re keen on learning how video games are employed as training grounds for military strategy.
