Introduction
Growing up, life tends to get more complex, and it’s easy to miss the carefree days of childhood. I often find myself fondly remembering playing strategy games as a kid, and it feels good to revisit those games that shaped my younger years.
I’m sharing ten games that instantly transport me back to my childhood in the late 90s and early 2000s – a simpler time before careers and responsibilities! This list is based on my own experiences, so it’s pretty personal, but I hope you’ll discover some fun games to play in 2026, and maybe even remember some of your own favorite classics.

10 – Empire Earth
I absolutely loved Empire Earth, and I think a lot of us fans do for the same reason: it’s like the best parts of Age of Empires and Civilization all rolled into one! What really set it apart for me was that it didn’t stick to just one historical period. It took you through all of human history, starting way back in the Stone Age and shooting all the way into the future! Plus, unlike some strategy games, it wasn’t turn-based; everything happened in real-time. But the coolest thing? Each new era felt fresh and exciting because they kept adding new units and technologies – from basic sword fights to long-range attacks, then planes, nukes, and even giant robots that could walk on water! Seriously, it was an incredible game.
9 – Red Alert 2

I got into strategy games in the best way possible! Red Alert 2 was only the second PC game I ever played, right after Age of Empires 2, so it’s no surprise I was hooked on the genre immediately. Seriously, those two games were my everything back then, and even now in 2026, Red Alert 2 holds up as one of the greatest RTS games ever. It just feels good to play, with its cool art style, those wonderfully cheesy cutscenes, and incredibly unique units. The unit control is still some of the best I’ve ever experienced in a strategy game. If you’re looking for something a little newer, though, I’d also recommend checking out Tempest Rising – it’s a great game too!
8 – World War 2: Frontline Command

You’re probably looking at this and thinking, ‘What even is this game? I’ve never heard of it!’ And honestly, you’re not alone. I don’t think I know anyone who’s actually played it. But I swear it’s real – I still have the original disc! The best way to explain it is that it’s kind of like an early version of Company of Heroes. Actually, it was probably the first WWII strategy game I ever played. It was way more hardcore than anything else I was used to at the time. Visibility was super limited, units could get pinned down, and enemies would actually react to gunfire, moving to check it out. The campaign really opens up and gets better as you go, unlocking new vehicles and gear. I think it’s considered abandonware now, so if you dig around online, you should be able to find it.
