As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that the news about Street Fighter 6 potentially adding more guest fighters from other franchises has me absolutely ecstatic! The addition of Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui was a game-changer, not just for their fighting skills but also for the potential it opens up for future crossovers.

Producer Shuhei Matsumoto of Street Fighter 6 has shared his enthusiasm for incorporating additional guest fighters into the game, following the introduction of Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui as downloadable content (DLC) characters in the game’s Year 2 pass. The diverse cast of Street Fighter 6 has expanded significantly with both seasoned characters and new faces, bringing the total to 18 characters after the Year 1 Character Pass. The upcoming Year 2 DLC is generating a lot of excitement among players, as it includes the return of M. Bison and Elena, along with two guest fighters hailing from SNK’s Fatal Fury series, Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui.

The announcement that Terry and Mai would join Street Fighter 6’s Year 2 Pass was met with great enthusiasm because it signifies a first for Street Fighter games – the incorporation of characters from an external property. Unlike previous guest fighters in Street Fighter, who typically hail from other Capcom series like Final Fight, Terry and Mai are coming from another source. Producer Shuhei Matsumoto is optimistic that this could pave the way for more third-party collaborations, which he anticipates may occur after these two characters are introduced to the game.

During an interview with IGN, Matsumoto was queried about his thoughts on additional guest fighters joining the fighting game in the future. Matsumoto expressed hope that the Fatal Fury crossover DLC for Street Fighter 6 could pave the way for other intellectual properties to join the fray. Matsumoto highlighted the overwhelmingly positive reception given to Terry and Mai, a response they aim to replicate, despite the obstacles they faced in making it happen. “This was quite a significant challenge for us to even include these guest characters…yet I hope things progress smoothly, and more opportunities arise for us,” Matsumoto shared.

Street Fighter 6’s Possible Crossovers

As a passionate fan, I wasn’t the only one who was curious about potential guest stars for Street Fighter 6. Even the game’s director, Takayuki Nakayama, faced similar questions regarding the possibility of incorporating Mortal Kombat characters into the roster. While Nakayama acknowledged that guest fighters could attract more attention to other fighting game franchises, he also cautioned about the potential for these additions to overshadow fan-favorite characters fans eagerly anticipate seeing in Street Fighter 6.

We found it rather difficult to integrate these guest characters into our work, but fingers crossed, progress will be made and new possibilities may arise for us.

In a recent discussion, Matsumoto spoke about the possibility of future Capcom crossover games, inspired by the unexpected relaunch of SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos and the impending Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection Arcade Classics. Matsumoto expressed that Capcom harbors grand ambitions for creating more cross-franchise fighting games, as well as bringing back some classic fighting game titles to modern platforms. Currently, Terry Bogard is scheduled to be the second DLC character in Street Fighter 6, with an expected release this Fall.
