Strongest Fire Spells In The Final Fantasy Games

Summary

  • Final Fantasy 9’s unique Firaga Sword allows Vivi and Steiner to combine their powers for a strong fire attack.
  • Meltdown in Final Fantasy 6 deals fire and wind-based damage while ignoring enemy defenses.
  • Final Fantasy 16’s Ignition skill allows Clive to use powerful fire-based abilities by absorbing Eikons.

Magic has been a significant feature within the “Final Fantasy” game franchise since its initial release in 1987 for the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System). Back then, players had the option to select various magic-focused roles, such as the Black Mage, and purchase spells at stores. Nowadays, many abilities are gained through character development, skill progression paths, or Job assignments. One of the most prominent magical elements in the series is associated with fire.

As a dedicated enthusiast, I’ve always been captivated by the diverse forms of pyro attacks in the Final Fantasy series. Some have graced multiple games, while others have remained unique to one title. Today, let’s delve into the impact these fire-based abilities have had on the Final Fantasy universe and establish a power ranking, excluding those from fire-summons like Ifrit, as that would be an unfair comparison. Let’s light up our journey through flames!

8. Firaga Sword (Final Fantasy 9)

Vivi and Steiner Team Up

In Final Fantasy 9, there’s an exclusive combo feature restricted to just two characters. One of these characters, Vivi, is a Black Mage with the ability to cast potent spells, including his strongest fire-based one called Firaga. Interestingly, when Vivi is part of the team, he and Steiner, who’s a knight using physical abilities, can perform Sword Magic in unison.

Giving Steiner’s sword a magical charge will make it his most potent fire attack, known as the Firaga Sword. This attack can even surpass the power of Vivi’s individual Firaga spell.

7. Meltdown (Final Fantasy 6)

Wind And Fire Is A Lethal Mix

In certain games, you’ll find an ability called Meltdown. This ability can transform between non-elemental, as seen in Final Fantasy 8, and elemental, such as fire or wind, like in Final Fantasy 6. Interestingly, Meltdown is a fire attack in Final Fantasy 6, but it also inflicts wind damage. Additionally, it has the unique quality of bypassing enemy defenses.

Using it carries a potential threat, since it indiscriminately targets both enemies and allies. Yet, players have the option to arm themselves with protective gear that can ward off the spell’s effects, thereby minimizing any inconvenience.

6. Ignition (Final Fantasy 16)

The Power Of Phoenix

In the game “Final Fantasy 16”, players mainly control a character named Clive. Throughout the storyline, he has the ability to summon beings known as Eikons. Initially, he is endowed with the powers of Ifrit, but he also acquires another Eikon that specializes in fire, namely Phoenix.

In battle, players can alternate among Clive’s Eikons, each granting unique skills. The most effective Fire ability he possesses is Flames of Rebirth; this skill unleashes a column of fire in an area, simultaneously healing Clive.

5. Flare (Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13)

A Bright Burn On All

Similar to Meltdown, Flare can either be pyrostatic or non-elemental in the series, with the latter being more common in games such as Final Fantasy 4 and Final Fantasy 6. However, in Final Fantasy 7, Flare is a fire-based spell, but it is overshadowed by the version found in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13.

In that game, I find myself wielding Flare, a devastating attack that sears enemies with intense heat. Being solo as Lightning in this game, I rely heavily on wide-range spells like Flare to swiftly dispose of battles.

4. Hell Firaga (Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7)

Shoot Fireballs And Cause Status Effects

In Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7, players appreciate the unique Materia system, where they can combine items to create more potent spells. For instance, Hell Firaga unleashes three fireballs at random toward enemies or a single enemy, dealing substantial damage.

What’s particularly lethal about Hell Firaga is that it comes with status effects such as Poison, Silence, Stop, and Death. If fortune favors the player, Hell Firaga can be a swift killer, which works well for Zack since he, like many travelers, was venturing alone.

3. Firaga Fury (Final Fantasy 10)

Breaking The Limit

In different games, Limit Breaks take different forms; for instance, in Final Fantasy 8, Irvine has the ability to use Shot. Depending on the ammunition he carries, he can fire repeatedly, and players can strategically stack these shots. The Fire Ammo is his strongest fire-based attack and can be extremely damaging.

Players can derive even more benefits from Lulu in Final Fantasy 10 if they activate her Overdrive. The skill Firaga Fury repeatedly casts Firaga based on the player’s ability to time button presses. While it deals significant damage when used at full strength, this can also inflict a lot of harm.

2. Firaja (Final Fantasy Tactics)

Strategically Spreading Fire

In most instances within the series, Firaga stands out as the top fire-based spell for Black Mages. However, there are some spells that surpass this norm. For instance, in Final Fantasy Tactics, Firaja is the superior fire-based spell for Black Mages. This potent spell unleashes a significant amount of damage across a wide area on the battlefield grid.

As a devoted player, I’ve come to appreciate the strategic value of casting Haste on Black Mages in our favorite game. The process requires patience since it can take time to execute, and it’s susceptible to interruptions if enemies decide to scramble. However, that’s precisely why bestowing Haste becomes so crucial – it speeds up their spellcasting speed, giving us the upper hand against those pesky adversaries!

1. Flare Star (Final Fantasy 14)

The Ultimate Fire Spell

In select video games such as Final Fantasy 6, a character named Gau can acquire Flare Star from certain monsters. Nevertheless, its potency is insignificant compared to its impact in Final Fantasy 14. In this game, it stands as the premier spell for Black Mages, primarily focusing on one target with intense damage before spreading outwards within a certain radius.

In a broader context, Firaja’s expansion is reminiscent of what happens in ‘Final Fantasy Tactics’, only on a more expansive level. When it comes to magic, ‘Final Fantasy 14’ boasts some of the most potent within the series. However, mastering spells such as Flare Star demands commitment, given the numerous Jobs involved. This commitment can be challenging and time-consuming, but the rewards make it all worthwhile in the end.
