Strongest Pokemon Trainers in Kalo Region

As a Pokémon fan, I always thought Kalos was one of the coolest regions. It’s packed with really unique and strong Pokémon, and the trainers there are seriously good at battling. It’s a shame we didn’t get to revisit it for so long, because for over ten years, the only way to experience Kalos was through Pokémon X and Y.

As a long-time Pokémon fan, I was so excited to see Game Freak and The Pokémon Company finally give the Kalos region the attention it deserved with Pokémon Legends: Z-A! The whole game takes place in and around Lumiose City, which is awesome. With all the Gym Leaders, Elite Four from the original games, and now the Z-A Royale competition, Kalos is clearly brimming with powerful trainers who know how to use Mega Evolution. It really feels like a hub for strong Pokémon battles!

These eight characters are considered the most powerful, judged by their team strength, how important they are to the story, their achievements, and their wins against other capable trainers.

AZ

A 3000-Year-Old Living Legend

  • Debut: Pokemon X and Y
  • Frequently used Pokemon: Torkoal, Golurk, Sigilyph, Eternal Flower Floette

The story of the Kalos region revolves around AZ, its former king. He created a powerful weapon that unintentionally made him immortal, forcing him to wander alone for over three thousand years. During this incredibly long life, he became a highly skilled Pokémon Trainer, as players can see when they battle him at the climax of Pokémon X and Y.

AZ’s Pokémon are all level 60 and quite strong. However, players only battled him once, so it’s unknown if he grew even more powerful between the stories of X and Y and Legends: Z-A. Given that he built the Ultimate Weapon and had a close bond with his Floette, who could Mega Evolve, it’s clear AZ remained a highly skilled trainer throughout his life.

Wikstrom

Kalos’ Steel-Type Elite Four Member

  • Debut: Pokemon X and Y
  • Frequently used Pokemon: Klefki, Probopass, Scizor, Aegislash

Determining the strongest member of the Kalos Elite Four is tricky, as players can challenge them in any order. However, many would argue that Wikstrom is the most formidable, largely because his Pokémon specialize in the Steel type, which offers a significant advantage.

Wikstrom’s team is full of resilient Pokémon, making them tough to defeat. His strongest asset is his Aegislash, a notoriously powerful Pokémon from the sixth generation. Some believe that if Wikstrom had used a Mega Scizor, similar to his animated version, he would have been a formidable opponent for Champion Diantha.

Grisham

This Team Flare Nouveau Member Sits At The Top Of Rank A

  • Debut: Pokemon Legends: Z-A
  • Frequently used Pokemon: Pangoro, Malamar, Pyroar, Tyranitar, Salamence, Mega Charizard X

In Legends: Z-A, players climb the ranks of the Z-A Royale, progressing from Z to A. At the highest level, Rank A, is Grisham, the owner of Nouveau Café and a key member of Team Flare Nouveau. This organization aims to correct the errors of the original Team Flare and restore its reputation.

Grisham is a remarkably skilled Pokémon trainer, boasting a team of fully evolved Pokémon, including the powerful Tyranitar and Salamence, as well as a Mega Charizard X with devastating attacks like Flare Blitz and Dragon Rush. Although the player character ultimately defeated him, Grisham proved his strength in the final battle by helping Team MZ defeat several Rogue Mega Evolved Pokémon with his partner, Griselle.

Lysandre / L

The Leader Of Team Flare

  • Debut: Pokemon X and Y
  • Frequently used Pokemon: Mienshao, Honchkrow, Pyroar, Noivern, Florges, Mega Gyarados

Each main Pokemon game usually features a powerful regional trainer as the main villain, and Lysandre fits that mold perfectly. As the leader of Team Flare, players battle him several times in Pokemon X and Y, culminating in a final showdown where he uses his incredibly strong Mega Gyarados.

Okay, so Lysandre is a seriously tough opponent – his Pokémon team is always on point. But it’s not just that, he actually tried to steal the power of Xerneas and Yveltal, which makes total sense when you find out his other version in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon actually controls those legendaries! Then, things get really interesting. In Legends: Z-A, a Lysandre with amnesia – they call him ‘L’ – shows up and is trying to make up for his past mistakes by working with Zygarde. You can battle him after you beat the main game, and honestly, his team is insane now. His Mega Gyarados is a whopping Level 80 – it’s a brutal fight!

Taunie/Urbain

One Of The Strongest Rivals In The Series

  • Debut: Pokemon Legends: Z-A
  • Frequently used Pokemon: Meowstic, Goodra, Avalugg, Manectric, Meganium, Emboar, Feraligatr

Fans thought the rival trainers in Pokemon X and Y were too weak, so Game Freak appears to have made the rivals in Pokemon Legends: Z-A much stronger. This is especially true for the main rival, Taunie/Urbain, who is one of the most challenging trainers in the game.

Taunie and Urbain are powerful rivals who progress alongside the player, ultimately achieving the same Rank A status. Driven to become a top Mega Evolution trainer like the player, they strategically use a Mega Evolution that counters the player’s starter Pokémon. Their skill is clearly demonstrated by the fact that players can be defeated by them in the final battle without disrupting the story’s progression. They also played a crucial role in stopping Ange by using Mega Eternal Flower Floette to enter Prism Tower.

Diantha

The Original Champion Of The Kalos Region

  • Debut: Pokemon X and Y
  • Frequently used Pokemon: Hawlucha, Tyrantrum, Aurorus, Gourgeist, Goodra, Mega Gardevoir

Diantha is a globally recognized movie star and the very first Champion of the Kalos region in the Pokémon world. In the X and Y games, players could battle her after overcoming the Elite Four. She’s considered the strongest trainer in the region and is unique among most characters in the game because she has a complete team of six Pokémon that have reached their final evolutions.

Diantha’s Pokémon team is powerful, featuring strong choices like Hawlucha, Tyrantrum, and Aurorus. However, her Goodra—a particularly strong Pokémon—and her Mega Gardevoir are her real standouts. Mega Gardevoir can deliver incredibly powerful Special Attacks, such as Moonblast, Psychic, and Shadow Ball. It’s disappointing that Diantha hasn’t returned in a main-series Pokémon game since her first appearance—she was even absent from Legends: Z-A due to her acting commitments—as it would be fascinating to see how much her team has improved.

The Player (Pokemon X and Y)

The New Champion (And Savior) Of The Kalos Region

  • Debut: Pokemon X and Y
  • Frequently used Pokemon: Chesnaught, Delphox, Greninja, Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise, Mega Lucario

Diantha was once the champion of the Kalos region, but she lost her title to the player character in Pokémon X and Y. While each player’s experience is unique, this character is known for certain accomplishments, like discovering the secrets of Mega Evolution and training a Mega Lucario—a gift from Korrina. They also achieved the highest rank in the Battle Château and saved Kalos from the threat of Lysandre and Team Flare.

Unlike characters like Red, the fate of the hero from X and Y isn’t really explained after their initial game. They appear very little in Legends: Z-A, but it’s likely they returned the Champion title to Diantha and continued traveling to become even stronger.

The Player (Pokemon Legends: Z-A)

The Strongest Mega Evolution Trainer And The Champion Of The Z-A Royale

  • Debut: Pokemon Legends: Z-A
  • Frequently used Pokemon: Meganium, Emboar, Feraligatr, Eternal Flower Floette, Xerneas, Yvetal, Zygarde, Various Mega Evolved Pokemon

Throughout the Pokémon series, it’s often been shown that being a Champion doesn’t always mean you’re the very best trainer in a region – that’s why Diantha and the hero of X and Y aren’t ranked highest. In fact, the main character of Legends: Z-A is actually the strongest trainer in all of Kalos, despite not having officially beaten the current Champion yet.

This trainer quickly climbed the ranks in Z-A Royale, achieving Rank A alongside Taunie/Urbain. More impressively, they became known as the strongest Mega Evolution trainer by successfully capturing and controlling many powerful, rogue Mega Evolved Pokémon, including Mega Absol, Mega Hawlucha, Mega Barbaracle, and Mega Dragonite. Plus, the hero of Legends: Z-A actually caught both Xerneas and Yveltal, and was specifically selected by Zygarde to protect Lumiose City. In contrast, the player in X and Y can only choose to catch one of those legendary Pokémon, and simply finds Zygarde in a cave – they weren’t personally chosen by it.
