- Directed by Yasuhiro Aoki, the plot involves a mermaid princess asking an office worker to marry her.
4°C Studio is currently developing a fresh original anime film! This upcoming project was unveiled during Toei’s 2025-2026 lineup press event, as Toei Animation (known for series like Dragon Ball and One Piece) will be handling the movie’s distribution in Japan.
4°C Studio, established in 1986, began delving deeper into anime production during the 2000s; however, their earlier work in this field was relatively scarce. They contributed to several projects prior to the 2000s, but their significant involvement came later. Notable works include episodes from ‘The Animatrix’ (2003) and the entire ‘Berserk: Golden Age Arc’ trilogy.
The upcoming movie, called “ChaO,” is scheduled to premiere in Japan during Summer 2025. Given that Toei Animation is part of its creation, there’s a possibility they might distribute it globally, either through cinemas or online streaming platforms.
So far, there’s no news on international showings, but Studio 4°C hinted at the movie being intended for global viewers by posting about it in English.
As a passionate connoisseur of animation, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of a masterpiece that’s been in the making by Studio 4°C for an astounding seven years! This isn’t just any movie; it’s a hand-drawn cinematic spectacle, painstakingly crafted with over 100,000 individual drawings. I can hardly wait to see the final product unfold on the big screen!
Directed By Naruto: The Last Assistant Animation Director
Yasuhiro Aoki serves as the head in terms of direction. He has been acknowledged for his role as an assistant animation director on “The Last: Naruto the Movie,” a film that many fans consider canonical due to its depiction of Naruto and Hinata’s wedding. Additionally, he has directed projects such as “Senjutsu Choukoukaku Orion, Honey Tokyo” and Episode 4 of “Batman: Gotham City.
As an animation enthusiast, I’m thrilled to be part of the buzz surrounding “Tower of God”! Hirokazu Kojima, known for his work on “Deadman Wonderland,” takes on the roles of character designer and chief animation director. On the other hand, Hiroshi Takiguchi, recognized for his work in “Ajin” and “Weathering with You,” steps up as the art director. The head writer (or writers) remains a mystery for now, but there’s an exciting possibility that Aoki might be penning the script too!
ChaO’s Plot Premise Looks Like Some Sort of Funny Little Mermaid Tale
From my vantage point, I find myself observing an intriguing narrative unfolding in what appears to be a not-so-distant future. This world, however unusual, is populated by both humans and mermaids coexisting harmoniously. In this unique setting, a character named Chao, who hails from the mermaid kingdom, unexpectedly proposes marriage to an office worker known as Stephen.
No information regarding international release has been officially announced.
