Subnautica 2 will be available on Xbox Game Pass starting May 14th when it enters early access (known as Game Preview on Xbox). Originally planned for release in 2025, the game’s launch was pushed to 2026 due to a lengthy legal battle.
Subnautica 2 is the sequel to the popular 2018 survival game Subnautica, and its standalone expansion, Subnautica: Below Zero. In this new installment, players must survive on an ocean-covered planet by exploring its underwater world, discovering unique life forms and environments, and crafting the tools they need to stay alive. The original Subnautica became a hit in 2018, boosted by enthusiastic coverage from online creators and YouTubers.
Subnautica 2 was officially revealed in April 2022. Early reports suggested it would be a constantly updated, online game with microtransactions, which upset many fans. The developers, Unknown Worlds, were quick to assure players that the game wouldn’t include season passes, subscriptions, or battle passes.

Subnautica 2 is a thrilling underwater adventure where you’ll try to survive on a completely new alien planet. As the next installment in the Subnautica series, created by Unknown Worlds, the game begins with you fleeing a conflict back home. The ship’s AI demands the mission continue, leaving you stranded and facing incredible challenges. It’s up to you to survive and secure a future for humanity on this strange new world.
When Subnautica 2 launched into early access, Unknown Worlds explained that the game is still actively being developed. They plan to regularly add new areas, creatures, and items, as well as expand the story. Players should expect to find bugs, unfinished features, and potential performance problems. The developers are relying on player feedback to help them improve and finish the game, and they invite players to join them in building the next Subnautica adventure.
