In simple terms, “Subnautica” is an open-world survival game that came out in 2018, set on an ocean planet where you play as a survivor of a crashed spaceship. Initially, you have few resources to work with and must explore the deep sea to collect necessary materials for crafting, fixing the ship, and staying alive. The ultimate aim is to eventually leave the planet. Throughout the game, you need to keep track of your health, hunger, thirst, and oxygen levels, among other survival challenges. Despite its popularity, the developers announced a sequel, “Subnautica 2,” in 2024, hinting at a more extensive experience. In a developer blog post, the team behind Subnautica 2 unveiled some aspects of the upcoming game, giving fans a glimpse into its grand scale and exciting features. Subnautica 2 Will Be Bigger and More Ambitious Than Previous Games

To develop the characteristics and setting of Subnautica 2, Gallego mentioned that the team is leveraging all the knowledge they’ve acquired from their past projects and incorporating it into this new game. The upcoming title will introduce novel vehicles, craftable items, biomes, and leviathans. Additionally, some construction mechanics will be refined with the addition of support pillars and superconducting foundations, and an enhanced scanner tool. The latest trailer suggests updates to the inventory system as well, which appears to have been revamped in Subnautica 2.

In addition to Subnautica 2, you’ll find an online multiplayer cooperative mode that allows up to four players. The exact launch date is still a mystery, but the developers plan to maintain the game in Early Access for approximately two to three years. Their goal is to ensure quality at a manageable pace.
