Sucker Punch Doesn’t Want to Make a New Sly Cooper Game

It appears that the possibility of a fresh Sly Cooper game from the original creators, Sucker Punch, is becoming less likely according to statements made by one of their creative directors. Sucker Punch initially developed the Sly Cooper series, and while subsequent games with the Thievius Raccoonus protagonist were developed by Sanzaru Games, many fans fondly remember the early chapters of this beloved franchise.

Among games such as Jak and Daxter and LittleBigPlanet, Sly Cooper is often recognized as one of PlayStation’s overlooked gem franchises from the early 2000s. The initial three games in the series were launched between 2002 and 2005. Although Sanzaru Games took over for the anthology The Sly Collection in 2010 and the original adventure Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time in 2013, the originals from Sucker Punch continue to hold a significant spot in the memories of numerous gamers.

Sucker Punch Is Likely Done With Sly Cooper

It appears that Nate Fox, a co-creative director from Sucker Punch, hinted during a recent interview on MinnMax’s YouTube channel that there’s not much enthusiasm within the creative team for continuing the raccoon franchise of Sly Cooper. When asked about his colleagues’ reactions to the possibility of working on a new game in the series, Fox estimated that only around 10% of them would be excited. The long gap of two decades since Sucker Punch last developed a Sly Cooper game seems to be a factor contributing to this lack of interest, as per Fox’s explanation during the interview.

As a dedicated gamer myself, I’ve got to say that while Sly Cooper was undoubtedly Sucker Punch’s breakthrough title, it wasn’t their only shining moment. They also struck gold with the action-adventure series Infamous from 2009 up until 2014. Right now, they’re hard at work on the Ghost of Tsushima sequel, Ghost of Yotei, set to drop on October 2. In a recent interview, when asked about an old Fox letter suggesting that abandoning Sly Cooper would lead to financial losses, the creative director playfully retorted, “I hope you enjoy Ghost of Yotei!”

Fox’s latest remarks mirror the stance declared by the studio back in 2022, which made clear that Sucker Punch had no intentions to resurrect either Sly Cooper or Infamous. This was in response to whispers about upcoming games for both series. Although Fox appears uninterested, it seems there’s a significant number of fans excited for another Sly Cooper escapade.
