As a long-time anime enthusiast who has seen my fair share of both hits and misses, I must say that Suicide Squad Isekai was a bit of a mixed bag for me. Having grown up on classic isekai series like Sword Art Online and Re:Zero, I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of excitement at the prospect of super villains in an isekai setting.
Are you yearning for more Harley Quinn and her gang of criminals in the isekai realm? Don’t fret! As the curtain falls on the first season of Suicide Squad Isekai, which concluded recently following a ten-episode journey amidst stiff competition in the Summer 2024 anime landscape, fans can rest assured that there will be more content from this franchise.
Although we haven’t received news about another season, WIT Studio is ready with an exciting project to maintain the franchise’s excitement. They have announced that they will be adapting the manhwa “Suicide Squad Isekai” for LINE Manga (or Webtoon), which will soon be available.
WIT STUDIO prepares an intense, colorful isekai journey in a vertical scrolling format specifically designed for WEBTOON readers. While immersed in the TV anime, don’t forget to anticipate the WEBTOON adaption of Suicide Squad ISEKAI too!
Suicide Squad Isekai Webtoon: Release Details and Format
On August 25th, it has been officially confirmed that the Webtoon version of “Suicide Squad Isekai” will be launched. You can access this vibrant, scrollable comic through Line Manga and Jump Toon. This is WIT Studio’s pioneering attempt to adapt an anime series into a Webtoon simultaneously.
Same Story, New Medium
It’s anticipated that the plot will closely resemble the original storyline from the anime, although the studio hasn’t explicitly confirmed this. The characters we’re familiar with – Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Peacemaker, Clayface, and King Shark – are likely to be part of the cast. They’ll embark on a perilous journey into a fantasy realm, where they’ll encounter magic, orcs, and potentially lethal implants. If they fail to find their way back to their own world, they could face severe repercussions.
If the Webtoon is just going to follow the same storyline as the anime, what’s the use? However, it seems that Studio WIT could incorporate unique scenes/bonus content exclusive to the Webtoon, which might delve deeper into the series’ backstory or flesh out subplots and character arcs. Possibly, this additional content will make the experience more enticing.
How the Suicide Squad Isekai Can Succeed Where the Webtoon Failed
Essentially, it appears that this Webtoon serves as a means to honor the anime’s triumph and maintain enthusiasm for it, aiming to sustain its relevance until an official announcement of a second season.
In a fresh and captivating twist, “Suicide Squad Isekai” proposes a unique scenario where infamous villains find themselves transported into a different world. Although the idea seemed enticing, the actual portrayal of this concept drew varied opinions from both fans and critics.
The anime excels through its captivating collection of characters and smart use of recognizable intellectual properties, eliminating the necessity for extensive backstories. This strategy enabled the show to jump right into the thrilling action and emotional storylines, which appealed to audiences who appreciated the James Gunn film and DC Comics from the get-go. For many viewers, particularly those less versed in American superhero lore, this take on the Suicide Squad could have become their preferred representation of these characters. Particularly Harley Quinn, whose anime portrayal seemed like a perfect fit, as if she were destined to be an anime character all along.
Initially, the show got off to an impressive start, embracing its unique idea and delivering on the excitement built up by the hype, along with some genuinely funny interactions. The unexpected twist at the end certainly kept viewers intrigued. However, as the plot unfolded, it became clear that the full creative potential of the concept wasn’t fully utilized.
Creative Freedom Got The Story Nothing In Return
As a gamer diving into Suicide Squad Isekai, I was initially excited about its premise. However, the anime seemed to prioritize intense action sequences over in-depth character development. Sure, these action scenes were thrilling, but they overshadowed opportunities to delve deeper into the characters’ complexities beyond their superficial traits.
In the isekai genre, at its peak, presents an opportunity for limitless creativity in world-building, allowing authors to let their imaginations run wild. However, it seems that once again we find ourselves in a typical fantasy realm. Given the promise of an unusual and extraordinary journey, the ordinary qualities of this fantastical world were particularly disheartening.
1. The rhythm of the tale presented difficulties, especially during the middle installments which appeared slow and tedious. Although the main plotline was acceptable, it fell short of the imaginative style that many spectators expected. The isekai universe, instead of being a fresh and captivating setting, seemed generic and unoriginal. This failure to develop a truly original universe left certain viewers dissatisfied, as the idea of Suicide Squad in another realm held potential for more innovative storytelling and world-construction.
However, the series lived up to its expectations, offering a light-hearted, somewhat absurd journey that was not intended for deep analysis. It seems that potential improvements might lie in the Webtoon versions.
The Webtoon Adaptation: A Second Chance
Webtoons might work best for this comic series due to its playful nature. As a “whimsical comic,” it shines as leisurely reading, ideal for on-the-go moments like commuting or quick breaks. This format enables readers to consume the story in manageable chunks, potentially elevating their experience with the series’ humorous and action-packed narrative.
Beyond this, the transition to the Webtoon format provides a chance to enrich the storytelling aspects that were limited in the anime medium. With additional room to flesh out characters and deepen the exploration of the isekai universe, the Webtoon might delve into imaginative plot points that weren’t present in the animated version. It also offers an opportunity to rectify the pacing problems seen in the anime, resulting in a more harmonious narrative progression.
The fully colored, vertical-scroll format of the Webtoon also presents an exciting visual prospect. This style can bring new life to the characters and the fantasy world, potentially offering a fresh and engaging visual experience that complements the story.
