Summary
- Sun Breathing is the strongest against Muzan due to its speed and accuracy.
- Other Breathing Styles like Insect and Stone Breathing can also be effective on Muzan.
- Muzan’s vulnerability to different Breathing Styles makes teamwork essential to defeat him.
Observing in the realm of “Demon Slayer”, I’ve noticed that Breathing Styles hold immense significance for the success of our demon slayers. These ancient techniques empower their strikes and endow them with unique traits tailored to combat a diverse array of demons. Yet, when confronted by the Demon King, one may wonder if any of these styles will prove effective.
Each Breathing Technique serves a distinct function. Thunder Breathing, renowned for its rapidity, contrasts with Mist Breathing, characterized by its elusiveness. The effectiveness of these methods can vary greatly depending on the circumstances. With a lifetime spanning over a millennium in the Demon Slayer universe, Muzan has developed an adaptability to all perils. Which Breathing Style will prove most potent against him remains to be seen?
Which Breathing Style Is Muzan the Weakest To?
Muzan isn’t just an ordinary demon; he’s been alive for over a millennium, suggesting that he’s spent most of his existence among humans and likely conquered many of his vulnerabilities. He possesses extraordinary abilities such as Night-Absolute Regeneration, which enables him to swiftly replace any damaged body parts. This was demonstrated when he quickly restored his smashed head during Season 4, Episode 8. However, it’s essential to note that Muzan is not invulnerable. In fact, he came close to being vanquished by Yoriichi Tsugikuni, who utilized Sun Breathing.
So far, Muzan’s heart trembles at the recollections of Yoriichi. This implies that Muzan remains susceptible to the power of Sun Breathing.
I’ve heard these words before.
Who is that? I don’t know.
This isn’t me. These aren’t my memories.
It’s the cells! Master Muzan’s!
The memories of the cells…
– Daki, Season 2, Episode 13
Why Does Sun Breathing Work on Muzan?

Initially, Sun-Inspired Breathing was the original Breathing Technique, serving as the foundation for all other Breathing Styles due to its strength. In order to combat Muzan, Yoriichi developed the Thirteenth Style of Sun Breathing, a compilation of the first twelve forms. This style inherits the precision and swiftness from the previous styles, making it particularly effective against Muzan.
Unique to Muzan is his physiology; boasting seven hearts and five independent brains floating within his body, this peculiar structure renders him indestructible. However, Sun Breathing’s extraordinary speed and precision enable targeting the mobile organs inside Muzan. It’s also noteworthy that for centuries, the existence of Sun Breathing was lost to memory, rendering Muzan defenseless against it since he had no chance to adapt to its power.
Can Other Breathing Styles Work on Muzan?

When wielded by formidable swordsmen such as the Hashira, even other Breathing Techniques could inflict harm on Muzan. Despite his remarkable resilience and adaptability, he is not invulnerable to these techniques. Potentially effective Breathing Techniques against Muzan might include:
1. Sun Breathing (Tsuzumi-no-Kami), which can purify demon blood.
2. Water Breathing (Yuki-Onna), with its ability to freeze and shatter opponents.
3. Fire Breathing (Kagaya), capable of burning through even the toughest of foes.
- Insect Breathing: The creation of Shinobu Kocho might do some serious damage to Muzan. It is the most unique Breathing Style as it does not rely on beheading and slicing but instead stabbing and piercing. Shinobu’s technique aims at poisoning its target, which critically hits the demon’s inner organs and makes them unable to function normally. With the use of a strong enough poison, Insect Breathing can significantly weaken Muzan.
- Stone Breathing: Stone Breathing stands out as it does not use Nichirin swords. Instead, it relies on the usage of a flail and ax. The Breathing Style was proven to be effective on Muzan when Gyomei managed to block Muzan’s attack and also smash his head.
As the decisive showdown with Muzan approaches, it’s crucial to understand that the impact of Breathing Styles on him can vary. However, one point remains certain: no one can vanquish Muzan alone. The Demon Slayers must join forces and collaborate to finally bring down the Demon King together.
