In tabletop role-playing games, Bards are well-known for their role as merry musicians, using melodies on the battlefield to bolster allies or disrupt enemies. Just like other bards, the Sunderfolk in an upcoming tactical RPG won’t be any different. This cheerful bard will specialize in boosting teammates and manipulating the battlefield to give heroes a strategic edge against adversaries within the enigmatic Sunderlands of Sunderfolk.
In our conversation with the team behind Secret Door, we delved into details about the game’s unique interpretation of the Bard class, specifically in Sunderfolk, with game director Erin Marek providing insights.
Sunderfolk Bard Abilities Explained
In the realm of tabletop games such as Dungeons and Dragons, the Sunderfolk’s Bard character is akin to minstrels on the battlefield – however, unlike traditional bards, these aren’t tuxedo-wearing bats. As game director Erin Marek explains, “The Bard has a versatile role.” They offer that crucial support, offering a bit of leeway to handle unexpected or risky situations.
Marek also explained that the Bard class is suitable for all levels of experience:
At its core, The Bard is easily accessible for people new to the genre, yet it hides a rich depth and strategic finesse that makes it an even more potent tool for seasoned players.
In the game of Sunderfolk, similar to other classes, the Bard boasts a passive skill called Two-Step. This talent allows the Bard to scatter Music Notes on the battlefield following certain actions, like exchanging positions with another player. This unique ability gives the Bard an exceptional edge in controlling the battlefield, as no other class in the game has this capacity. These Music Notes serve as potent bonuses that allies can take advantage of, enhancing attack power, speed, and various other aspects. Furthermore, as the Bard progresses through levels, they will acquire additional skills.
- Sharp Refrain: Deals damage to an enemy and summons a Music Note.
- Siren Song: Enchants an enemy or ally to move towards the Bard, and lets the Bard move too.
- Beat Drop: Allows the Bard to push enemies away and then move out of the fray.
- Shield Sonata: Damages an enemy while also protecting nearby allies.
- Power Chord: Damages multiple enemies, pushes them away, and buffs allies’ Strength.
- Crowd Surf: Uses Two-Step to reposition the Bard, then deals damage based on how far they moved.
The Bard’s Ultimate Ability Is A Stunning Performance
In the realm of Sunderfolk, every character class possesses a unique Ultimate Ability, with the Bard being no different. The Bard’s special ability is called Mosh Pit, a lively show that grants them the power to advance five full spaces and inflict damage on adjacent foes. What makes this even more advantageous is that it spurs allies into action as well, encouraging them to approach enemies and strike back. This ability bears some resemblance to Bardic Inspiration from Dungeons and Dragons, but instead of waiting for a turn, its effects take place instantly.
The Bard’s Cards: Fate Deck Explained
In the game of Sunderfolk, instead of rolling a D20 during battle, players will draw from the Fate Deck. The card they pick can boost or reduce their attack power, provide additional movement, or use a special modifier. Every class has its own unique Fate Deck that players can tailor as they progress and unlock new cards. Furthermore, the cards in each Sunderfolk Fate Deck complement the class’s existing skills.
The Bard’s Fate deck stands out by enabling the player to produce additional Music Notes, even when drawing a less favorable card like one reducing attack power by 2. The deck also includes cards that weaken opponents, reminiscent of traditional tabletop Bard skills such as Vicious Mockery. Furthermore, the Bard can motivate allies to assault enemies and even revive them with a fortunate draw. This diverse Fate Deck transforms Sunderfolk’s Bard into a multifaceted character that could be invaluable in any conflict, and even outside of battle, where their soothing music and amiable demeanor can win over numerous NPCs that players of Sunderfolk will meet throughout their journey.
