Super Mario Bros. Wonder was already a top game for the original Nintendo Switch, and now it’s available on the new Nintendo Switch 2 with improved performance and fresh content. Owners of the first game can purchase the new content, titled Super Mario Bros. Wonder: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park, for $19.99.
To build up the game selection for the Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo has been releasing updated versions of popular Switch games with improved features and content. These “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” versions are now available for titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Pokemon Legends: Z-A, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and, recently, Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
Add-ons for other Switch games cost less than the $19.99 upgrade for Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which might make some Nintendo fans think twice about buying it. After playing the new content in Super Mario Bros. Wonder: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park, I don’t believe the upgrade is worth the price.
What Comes With the Super Mario Bros. Wonder Switch 2 Upgrade
The new Super Mario Bros. Wonder takes players to Bellabel Park, where the main goal is to find Captain Toad in each world. This unlocks a boss fight against a Koopaling, who has been empowered by Bowser’s Wonder Power. These boss fights are creative and enjoyable, and even feature short, unique levels beforehand. While they are a standout part of the game, they can be finished in about 30 minutes. Surprisingly, there’s a lot of dialogue for a Super Mario game – too much setup and chatter between battles. It’s also a bit frustrating that the game sends you back to Bellabel Park after each fight instead of letting you move directly to the next one.
In Super Mario Bros. Wonder, players can use all the familiar power-ups and badges from the original game when battling the Koopalings. There’s also a new power-up called the Super Flower Pot, which transforms players into a plant that can shoot petals. It’s a good addition, though I personally like the elephant power-up better.
The game now includes dual badges, and players can enjoy all of Super Mario Bros. Wonder as Rosalina and Luma. Beyond revisiting the original game’s levels and challenging the new Koopalings, be sure to explore Bellabel Park for even more content.
Bellabel Park is a lively area where players can earn water by completing challenges. This water is then used to unlock decorations and other items to customize the park. Like collecting standees in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, getting these items involves a bit of luck – you won’t know what you’ll receive until you try. The park offers both team-based and competitive challenges to earn more water, though many reuse levels from the main game with new additions. For example, one challenge asks players to collect coins in a section of a level, while another is a Yoshi-themed competition to see who can eat the most.
Should You Buy Super Mario Bros. Wonder’s Switch 2 Upgrade?
While not essential, this game can be enjoyable with friends. After finishing the main bosses, I wasn’t motivated to fully complete it like I was with the original Super Mario Bros. Wonder. I doubt I’ll play the Switch 2 version much, and at $19.99, Super Mario Bros. Wonder: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park feels a bit pricey for what it offers. It would be an easier recommendation if it cost less.
