Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 Reveals Day One Update Patch Notes

Nintendo has shared the initial update details for Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2, set to release on October 2nd. While the notes are brief, they mention improvements to how Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 plays on both the Switch and Switch 2 consoles.

A key announcement from the Nintendo Direct presentation on September 12th was that Super Mario Galaxy will be released on both Switch and Switch 2. These improved versions are part of the 40th anniversary celebration for the Super Mario Bros. series, letting a new generation experience two of Nintendo’s most popular 3D platforming games. Although the updated games don’t have huge changes, they offer improved graphics, additional Storybook Chapters, an Assist Mode, and other enhancements. As the release date approaches, Nintendo has announced a day-one update.

The Version 1.2.0 update for Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 includes “several” changes designed to enhance how the game plays, as noted in the patch notes (translated by Nintendo Everything). The developers haven’t shared many specifics, so players will need to discover the changes themselves. It’s important to know that the update affects both the Switch and Switch 2 versions. Furthermore, the update includes improvements tailored specifically for the Switch 2, with the goal of achieving “smooth gameplay” on that platform.

It’s currently unclear exactly how much of a difference this first patch will make, but it’s good that Nintendo is working to enhance the game before it’s released. The Super Mario Galaxy games already performed smoothly on the original Wii, so hopefully Nintendo can create an experience that’s at least as good as the originals. Luckily, Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 are launching on October 2nd, meaning fans won’t have to wait much longer to enjoy these classic platformers. Players who have already downloaded the game should even be able to install Version 1.2.0 of the update right now.

It’s important to remember this isn’t the only Super Mario game that’s been updated recently. Nintendo unexpectedly released an update for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury on September 30th. Like the Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 update, the changes seem minor; the developers simply stated that “several issues have been addressed to improve the gameplay experience.” This followed a larger update for the Switch 2, which improved the game’s resolution and frame rate.

As a gamer, I’m seriously hyped about the launch of Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2! It’s awesome that both newcomers and fans like me who want to revisit these classics can now play them. These are easily some of Nintendo’s best Wii games, and the planet-hopping adventures still hold up. We’re all still waiting to hear about the next big 3D Super Mario game, but at least we can enjoy these older titles on the newest Nintendo hardware while we wait!
