As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of fighting games, but none quite like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The sheer scale and variety it offers are unparalleled, making it a true museum of gaming history. However, one area where it falls short in my humble opinion is the Stage Builder mode.
The smash hit game, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, has secured a place among Nintendo’s all-time best sellers. With more units sold than any other fighting game to date, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate boasts an irresistible hook: every character from the series past is present, alongside a host of fresh newcomers, including some truly remarkable downloadable content characters. The extensive lineup gives it a museum-like feel of gaming history, offering a wealth of play options and gameplay modes.
One significant feature introduced post-launch is the Stage Builder, a significantly upgraded version of a tool from past games. In this mode, players can construct their own battlefields for combat, equipped with numerous tools to facilitate creation. Regrettably, the Stage Builder in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate lacked in one substantial area and could have been even more expansive.
Smash Ultimate’s Stage Builder Could’ve Used More
Smash Ultimate Only Offers A Few Terrains
In contrast to earlier games in the series, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate provides a variety of terrain textures that can be used across all stages, rather than just specific textures tied to the chosen background, as was the case with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. This new feature allows players more flexibility when customizing their stages’ terrain.
In contrast, one of the most notable oversights in the Stage Builder for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the limited range of terrains and diversity. While the game provides 15 distinct terrain choices, this number remains unchanged from Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. However, considering that Ultimate offers 12 backgrounds compared to Wii U’s five, it seems fitting to provide a greater variety of universal texture options.
Smash Ultimate’s Terrain Options Are Too Generic
A significant issue lies in the fact that most of the terrain choices presented to gamers have minimal impact on the overall gameplay experience. While there are distinct textures like Ice, Lava, and Bouncy Rubber that provide unique gameplay styles for Super Smash Bros., many of these share similar characteristics with only slight variations. Even disregarding the limited number of choices, the lack of variety in these options can lead to increased frustration among players.
Regarding the variety in landscapes, it’s worth noting that all the selections are quite fundamental, such as Grass, Forest, and Marble. These textures aren’t derived from existing stages, which seems like a significant missed chance. Introducing terrain options based on actual stages would provide players with much broader customization possibilities than what’s available now, enabling them to create even more distinctive levels.
A significant point worth noting is that many of the terrain choices provided to players seem to have minimal impact on the overall game experience.
Players Could Create Stages Inspired By Smash Bros. Franchises
For this purpose, the backdrops provided by the Stage Builder are modeled after stages presented in the original game. In contrast to earlier versions which only provided superficial backgrounds, this game offers backgrounds that more accurately reflect the history, mythology, and series represented in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Using textures similar to those found on pre-existing stages would enhance players’ ability to construct stages that honor the numerous franchises featured in today’s Super Smash Bros..
In the realm of stage creation for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, there have been significant advancements compared to its predecessor on Wii U, yet it still seems to be falling slightly short in certain aspects. Although it appears to provide a wider range of options than before, one can’t help but feel that the potential of Smash’s extensive franchise roster has not been fully exploited. The groundwork is laid, but adding more depth would significantly enhance the Stage Builder, making it an indispensable feature for fans.
