Superhero video games were incredibly popular in the 1980s and 1990s. Many games featuring characters like Batman and Spider-Man were released for consoles like the NES and SNES. Although some of these older games still have appealing pixel art, modern gamers are looking for something different.
Many gamers prioritize having the best possible graphics, and that’s perfectly understandable. Even though some of these games are getting older – almost ten years in some cases – they still look fantastic. If you’re looking for a beautiful superhero game that will run smoothly on today’s computers and consoles, these are excellent choices.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Anyone Can Wear The Mask
Insomniac’s Spider-Man games are consistently visually impressive, with both familiar and new characters getting fresh, updated designs. The white webbing added to Peter Parker’s suit wasn’t a radical change, but it was a welcome modern detail that carried over beautifully into Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
The connection between Peter and Miles is truly captivating, but the game wouldn’t be nearly as impressive without the high-quality character designs and realistic animations. The smooth combat and swinging mechanics, combined with the stunning visuals of New York City, make this trilogy one of the best superhero game experiences available.
inFamous: Second Son
A Forgotten Sony Superhero
Released alongside the PlayStation 4 over ten years ago, inFamous: Second Son still holds up visually. The game shares themes with the X-Men, focusing on a clandestine government agency that hunts down people with extraordinary abilities, labeling them as threats.
Delsin is a rebellious young man who discovers he can absorb the powers of others, such as manipulating light and smoke. Second Son really showed off what the PlayStation 4 could do with its impressive visual effects during fights, and it still looks fantastic today, featuring a beautifully rendered version of Seattle.
Marvel’s Avengers
Assemble Online
Marvel’s Avengers aimed to be a continuously updated online game, similar to Destiny 2, but set within the Marvel universe. Although it didn’t receive as much post-launch content as planned, the initial game offered a solid story campaign. It follows Kamala Khan, a young hero, as she tries to bring the Avengers back together after a disaster causes them to disband and the public to lose faith in superheroes.
Marvel’s Avengers delivers a compelling story with strong performances and beautifully designed characters. The action sequences are also impressive, with fluid animations tailored to each hero’s unique abilities – like Kamala Khan’s stretching powers and Iron Man’s repulsors.
Gotham Knights
The Bat Family Comes Together
While not a direct continuation of the Arkham series, Gotham Knights still carries on Batman’s fight to protect Gotham City. However, Batman quickly disappears, leaving it to his adopted proteges to continue his work.
Players can take on the roles of Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, or Red Hood and protect Gotham City, either solo or with friends online. While the story isn’t quite as engaging as some other superhero games, Gotham looks fantastic with its glowing neon lights and shadowy streets, and the combat is solid.
Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy
James Gunn Would Be Proud
Despite coming out in 2021, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy didn’t quite get the recognition it deserved. While it’s different from the open-world gameplay of Insomniac’s Spider-Man games and isn’t the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of the team many fans know, this take on the Guardians of the Galaxy is genuinely enjoyable.
As a huge Marvel fan, I was really getting those familiar MCU vibes throughout the game! But honestly, the way it plays reminded me a lot of Mass Effect. You only control Star-Lord directly, which was different, but you can tell the rest of the Guardians what to do during fights. What really sets this game apart from other superhero titles, though, is how visually stunning and original it is – the planets, the aliens, all the crazy sci-fi stuff… it’s unlike anything I’ve seen before!
Marvel’s Midnight Suns
Pretty Stellar For A Card Game
Marvel’s Midnight Suns is a strategy game where you control heroes who move and fight using cards. While the character animations aren’t quite as refined as in some other superhero games, the game still looks very good overall, especially considering its unique style.
This strategy game centers around assembling a team of heroes to fight against a growing darkness that’s controlling the minds of both heroes and villains. Players make choices that drive the story forward and can heavily customize their Marvel heroes, making it a really engaging experience.
Injustice 2
Non-Mortals Kombat
Injustice 2 is a fighting game developed by NetherRealm Studios, the creators of Mortal Kombat. It picks up the story from the first game, where Superman and other super-powered individuals took control, believing humanity was unworthy of self-governance. After Batman formed a team to oppose them, this sequel sees him unexpectedly teaming up with Superman and other Metahumans to confront an even bigger danger.
As a fighting game fan, I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed the story in Injustice 2, even though I didn’t know all the DC characters as well as the Marvel ones. NetherRealm Studios games aren’t always the brightest, but the character models are fantastic, and the way they show injuries really makes this game stand out from the crowd.
Saints Row 4
Evolve Your Hero
Unlike games based on Marvel or DC comics, Saints Row 4 builds on the over-the-top action of previous Saints Row titles. Players take on the role of the President of the United States who gains superpowers after an alien invasion, and must use those powers to defeat the aliens no matter what.
Players have a lot of freedom to develop their character’s abilities, whether it’s becoming incredibly fast or unleashing powerful energy blasts. While the graphics aren’t cutting-edge, the wild story and over-the-top action in Saints Row 4 are so fun that many players will appreciate the creative choices made by the developers.
