As a die-hard fan of James Gunn’s work, I can’t help but be moved by his heartfelt tributes to his beloved pet, Wesley Von Spears. From “holographic dogs” to cigar brands, each nod to Wesley adds an extra layer of emotion to Gunn’s films. Now, with the new Superman movie, it seems that Metropolis has welcomed a chocolatier named Dr. Wesley Von Spears!

In a recent shooting of Superman, an attentive spectator spotted a touching dedication. This emotional acknowledgement served as the director’s method to honor his dearly departed friend and confidant.

In the ongoing filming of Superman in Cleveland, there’s been an increase in behind-the-scenes shots shared on social media. Among these images, one seemingly ordinary photo carries a profound implication. It underscores James Gunn’s practice of paying tribute to his long-deceased pet in his films, a tradition that dates back years.

In the latest filming at Arcade Cleveland, an affectionate Easter egg was found. A tweet from @joeyjoe showcases a candy store in Metropolis with a dog picture and the name “Wesley Von Spears,” a chocolatier. This could be seen as a tribute to director Gunn’s deceased dog, Wesley Von Spears. This heartwarming tribute is another instance of Gunn incorporating his cherished pet into his creative projects.

James Gunn’s cherished dog, Wesley Von Spears, sadly passed away in 2020 at the age of 17. Throughout Gunn’s travels and film productions, Wesley had been a faithful companion by his side. In the year 2014, during the making of Guardians of the Galaxy, Wesley made his first on-screen appearance as a holographic dog alongside Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) on the planet Morag. Three years later, he reappeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as the “Dog in the Back of Truck at Dairy Queen” during a flashback scene. Tragically, two weeks before filming for The Suicide Squad, Wesley passed away. Gunn paid tribute to his pet’s memory by incorporating cigars branded with the dog’s name in the movie. Continuing this tradition, Superman includes a touching homage to Wesley Von Spears. In this film, he is memorialized as Dr. Wesley Von Spears, a chocolatier in Metropolis, symbolizing the deep connection between Gunn and his loyal friend that endures even beyond death.

The latest revamp of the DC Universe has sparked much anticipation, yet crucial aspects are still shrouded in secrecy. David Corenswet steps into the iconic role of Superman, succeeding Henry Cavill. Known as a popular pick among fans, Corenswet shares striking similarities with both Cavill and the late Christopher Reeve, who debuted as Superman in 1978. Rachel Brosnahan assumes the role of Lois Lane, while other intriguing casting decisions have been made public: Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and María Gabriela De Faría as The Engineer. Reports suggest that the film will not delve into Superman’s origin but will instead present a modernized narrative. Clark Kent is said to be already working at the Daily Planet and interacting with key characters. Although the movie will uphold the fundamental values of Superman, it aims to provide a fresh perspective. Gunn has suggested that the film may take inspiration from DC Comics’ 2005-2008 run of All-Star Superman, although precise details about the adaptation are yet to be revealed.

Superman is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
