It’s possible that a fresh lawsuit may prevent the distribution of James Gunn’s Superman movie in Canada, the UK, Ireland, and Australia. The legal document suggests this claim would impede the release of Superman in these countries.
The legal action was initiated by the estate of Superman’s joint creator, Joseph Shuster, targeting DC Comics, DC Entertainment, and Warner Bros Discovery. This was done because in the mentioned countries, copyright law operates under a different system. Specifically, the rights expire 25 years after the author’s demise in these territories.
In 1992, Shuster passed away, followed by Siegel’s death in 1996. By law, most of Shuster’s foreign copyrights were transferred to his estate in 2017 (and in 2021 for Canada). However, the Defendants persistently use Superman in these territories without obtaining permission from the Shuster Estate.
A representative from WBD stated: “We strongly oppose the validity of the lawsuit, and we will firmly uphold our legal rights.
The estate has requested a complete halt in all actions, along with a court trial by a jury, while the global premiere of Superman is set for July 9, 2025. It seems that the long-drawn court trial favors the estate over WBD (Warner Bros. Discovery).
Let’s look at 3 other times superhero movies faced controversy.
3. Avengers: The Kang Dynasty
Majors Out, Downey In
As a devoted Marvel fan, I’ve been thrilled to witness the gradual unveiling of Kang as the next formidable threat in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Initially, we glimpsed him at the end of Loki Season 1, portrayed as He Who Remains. Then, he took center stage in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, solidifying his position as a menacing figure akin to Darth Vader, demonstrating immense power that left me trembling with anticipation.
Everything was arranged for the upcoming fifth Avengers film titled “The Kang Dynasty“, where Kang is positioned as a villain of similar caliber to Thanos.
The situation unfolded smoothly as expected, but things took a turn when Jonathan Majors, who portrays Kang, was indicted on charges of harassment and reckless third-degree assault. Following his conviction, in December 2023, Marvel Studios decided to terminate their professional relationship with the actor.
It wasn’t until July 2024 that Marvel broke their long silence and revealed what would come next, changing the title of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty to Avengers: Doomsday. Robert Downey Jr. will be back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe not as Tony Stark but as the main antagonist, Victor Von Doom.
2. Man of Steel
Superman Breaks Something

2013’s “Man of Steel” generated a tremendous wave of anticipation. It wasn’t just DC’s initial effort to replicate Marvel’s cinematic world, but also the first film about Superman’s son Krypton since the 2006 movie “Superman Returns” that didn’t do well. The selection of Henry Cavill, who perfectly fit the role of a superhero, fueled fan excitement as well.
Zack Snyder had built up a dedicated fanbase following the hits like “Dawn of the Dead,” “300,” and “Watchmen.” Known for his striking visuals, he stood out as a director who offered a more dynamic style in stark contrast to the more conventional cinematography seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
In terms of aesthetics, the film “Man of Steel” didn’t fall short of expectations. It was visually stunning. However, it stirred up debate due to Zack Snyder’s decision to have Superman end the final battle by snapping General Zod’s neck. This action contradicted the deeply ingrained moral principles that have always characterized Superman, shaping him as a role model for the entire superhero genre. Many fans were displeased.
The film “Man of Steel” sparked a significant divide, as some long-time fans disagreed with Snyder’s approach to the DC cinematic universe, finding it innovative and exhilarating, while others did not. This disagreement escalated into a dispute between Snyder and the studio, with each party having different ideas about the future of the DCU. For almost a decade, this disparity in vision affected every DCU film until Warner Bros. Discovery eventually chose to discontinue the universe and give James Gunn the opportunity to rebuild it.
1. The Dark Knight
The Heath Ledger Casting

2005’s Christopher Nolan film, “Batman Begins“, marked a refreshing change to a more realistic and serious portrayal of the Batman character, contrasting significantly with the over-the-top 1997 movie, “Batman & Robin“, where George Clooney donned a suit notoriously adorned with nipples.
The movie “Batman Begins” perfectly matched what many Batman enthusiasts had anticipated, largely due to its foreshadowing of the Joker as the antagonist in an upcoming, unnamed sequel (later known as “The Dark Knight”).
For more than a year, enthusiasts in online forums had been discussing who would portray the ideal Joker. However, during the summer of 2006, an exciting revelation surfaced: Heath Ledger was confirmed as the Joker! Here are some reactions from the Legion of Gotham message boards on that very day when the rumor emerged.
For over a year, online communities were abuzz with debates about who would make the perfect Joker. Finally, in the summer of 2006, the news dropped – Heath Ledger had been cast as the Joker! Here are some comments from the Legion of Gotham message boards, on the day the rumor was confirmed.
- Batlaw: woof. (crossing my fingers this is false)!
- The Dark Knight: Ledger? o_0 The guy from [Brokeback Mountain]? No thanks. He’s a great actor but I definitely dont see him as Joker.
- darkclaw: oh well if this rumor is true, there goes the franchise!
- Severen: I hope to God that this rumor proves false, or that he turns down the role. The guy is an adequate actor at best, and usually less than [that], with all the screen presence of a wet fish.
A considerable number of individuals showed enthusiasm towards Heath Ledger, even willing to give him a chance. However, there was an overwhelming amount of articles and comment sections filled with bewilderment to fury from fans. This was primarily due to the perception that Ledger was too good-looking, lacked sufficient talent, or because they were displeased with his character in Brokeback Mountain.
He gave an exceptional performance that ranks among the best in acting history, ultimately earning him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
