Summary
- The Superman movie is being compared to Guardians of the Galaxy because it reportedly blends action, drama, and some comedy.
- Actor Anthony Carrigan believes Superman has its own heart, intelligence, and uniqueness.
- Superman is rumored to have mixed tones comparable to Wonder Woman and Guardians of the Galaxy.
In the forthcoming Superman movie, one of the actors prefers not to draw comparisons between it and the upcoming DC Universe film, Guardians of the Galaxy from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Yet, the actor acknowledged that there are similar elements in both films due to James Gunn’s involvement as director for both productions.
The first film from the DC Universe, titled “Superman”, is set to release following Gunn and Safran’s takeover of DC Studios and their decision to rejuvenate the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). With its premiere approximately 3 months away, there’s a lot of buzz that it could be among the top films of the year. Some have likened it to Marvel Studio’s “Guardians of the Galaxy”, but one actor from “Superman” has voiced differing opinions.
Anthony Carrigan, who plays Rex Mason (also known as Metamorpho) in Superman, acknowledged the similarity of his upcoming movie to Guardians of the Galaxy due to both having action, drama, and humor. However, he clarified that the two films were distinct. “I’m reluctant to compare it to Guardians, but I believe that [Superman] shares the same warmth and intellect,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “That’s James’ signature. But I think it will be a unique entity altogether.” Carrigan described the filmmaking process as a “unique experience.” Moreover, everyone involved agreed on the approach for the movie, and he hoped that it would translate well on-screen, providing the audience with an enjoyable viewing experience.
Superman And Guardians Of The Galaxy Probably Won’t Have The Same Tone
Multiple resources suggest that James Gunn’s adaptation of Superman appears to be reminiscent of his previous Marvel Cinematic Universe project. A Portuguese fan site, now on X (previously Twitter), shared an early response from one of its test screenings. According to the post, the tone of Superman seems to mirror the acclaimed DCEU film, Wonder Woman and the initial Guardians of the Galaxy. Additionally, movie scooper Jeff Sneider made a similar observation in an episode of The Hot Mic. “It’s being described as very much like Gunn’s Guardians in tone,” the insider stated. However, another source who reportedly attended the recent test screening asserted that the film is not a comedy but contains humorous moments.
Furthermore, it appears that much of what we see in the trailer is from the beginning of the movie, suggesting that most of the plot remains a mystery. Moreover, the source has mentioned that the speculations about the movie are incorrect, which supports Carrigan’s statement that the film will not resemble Guardians of the Galaxy. The comparison between Superman and Guardians of the Galaxy has its advantages and disadvantages. Fans who appreciate the lighter, fun aspect of Guardians will likely enjoy Superman if it follows suit. Similarly, the team dynamic in Guardians could be present when Superman teams up with Krypto the Superdog or Supergirl. It’s been reported that Milly Alcock will make her debut as Supergirl in Superman. Ultimately, fans will need to form their own opinions about the movie’s tone once it’s released.
Superman hits theaters on July 11, 2025.
