In a charming twist, promotions for ‘Superman’ have shifted focus. James Gunn recently shared on social media that this year’s ‘Puppy Bowl‘ will introduce an award called the “Krypto’s Super Play of the Game Award.

James Gunn Has A Personal Connection To The Award

At the presentation, Gunn shared that his pet dog, Ozu, was the source of inspiration behind the DC Universe’s portrayal of Krypto.

Hello everyone, it’s James Gunn speaking along with my cherished companion, Ozu. You might be familiar with him or sense his essence as he served as the inspiration for Krypto, Superman’s valiant canine sidekick, in my upcoming Superman movie. What might surprise you is that Ozu himself is a rescue, and adopting him was one of the most significant decisions I’ve ever made. That’s why we’re thrilled to honor all the wonderful dogs out there seeking their forever homes. And what could be more fitting than tuning into this year’s Puppy Bowl and watching puppies from rescues nationwide vie for Krypto’s Super Play of the Game Award. The Puppy Bowl will air on

Historically, Krypto was portrayed as a bigger dog, similar to a Labrador Retriever. However, in Gunn’s movie, Krypto is smaller and has a wiry coat, much like the breed of Ozu.

Previously, Gunn had elaborated on Ozu’s past. “Ozu, a stray dog from a crowded backyard with 60 other dogs who had never interacted with humans, presented quite a challenge. Upon entering our home, he wrecked everything – our house, shoes, furniture, and even ate my laptop… I remember thinking to myself, ‘Wow, how tough would life be if Ozu had superpowers?’ – And so, Krypto was introduced into the script, altering the narrative’s direction, as Ozu was transforming my reality.

In Gunn’s film, it seems plausible that Clark and Krypto may exhibit a comparable relationship dynamic. Initially, they might clash, but as the story unfolds, they grow closer and eventually rely on each other. The trailer hints at this connection, showing an injured Superman asking Krypto to take him home.

When Does Superman Release In Theaters?

The movie titled “Superman” is scheduled for release on July 11, 2025; however, there’s a possibility that it might not be shown in key markets such as Britain and Canada due to ongoing legal issues.
