Superman’s David Corenswet Describes A Complicated Relationship in the Movie

Summary

  • Superman film to feature various DC characters, notably Krypto, who won’t be as heroic as fans may expect.
  • Krypto’s role in the film is more as a nuisance to Superman, causing trouble rather than being an essential sidekick.
  • The focus of the Superman movie is on Superman himself, ensuring an accurate portrayal and potentially setting the DCU for success.

As an ardent fan, I’m thrilled about Superman bringing a multitude of well-known and lesser-known DC characters to life. However, contrary to popular anticipation, these characters may not appear as prominently or positively as we fans might assume in the film.

The much-awaited project featuring Superman has been the talk of the comic book movie world since its announcement. Fans across various perspectives can’t wait to see the first film in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DCU. Initially titled Superman: Legacy, the project has progressed significantly through scripting, casting, shooting, and post-production before its July release. As the premiere draws near, viewers have been treated to a good deal of promotional material, such as the recent trailer from CinemaCon that James Gunn made available for public viewing online.

In contrast to his significant role in past trailers and promotional materials for Superman, it appears that Krypto, Superman’s canine companion, may not be as pivotal in the actual movie as some fans might expect. According to a recent interview with Fandango, this is because Superman doesn’t necessarily need Krypto, but rather, he is temporarily caring for the dog. As James Gunn has described, Krypto is portrayed as being more trouble than usual due to his superpowers.

Corenswet explained to fans that Krypto, Superman’s dog in the new storyline, causes a lot of trouble. He destroys the Fortress of Solitude, hunts wildlife, and just doesn’t listen. Despite their strong bond, it seems more like a hassle for Superman. This contrasts with some past depictions of Krypto as a model canine sidekick, but he’s also been portrayed as mischievous in the past. Including Krypto in the live-action reboot and giving him a unique personality is a smart move, allowing for character development over time. Even though James Gunn loves dogs and has done well with non-human characters, Krypto, being a non-anthropomorphic dog who can’t talk, doesn’t fit the same mold as characters like King Shark or Rocket Raccoon.

It remains uncertain how much of the film’s runtime will be dedicated to developing Krypto’s character and showcasing him, and fans will have to see the premiere to find out if it’s done effectively. However, the project appears promising as Superman star Anthony Carrigan has expressed confidence in Gunn’s approach, implying that it aligns with fans’ expectations for Superman, unlike previous versions seen under the Snyder vision. The praise suggests a greater emphasis on Superman over other characters like Krypto or supporting cast members. This is what fans anticipate from a Superman movie, and if Gunn manages to deliver, the DCU could have a strong start.

Superman is set for theatrical release on July 11, 2025.
