Summary
- Superman‘s second trailer is eagerly awaited by fans after a successful CinemaCon.
- Superman‘s unconventional marketing strategy, with minimal trailers, raises doubts about building momentum and shaping audience perception.
- Despite comparisons to Birds of Prey‘s poor marketing, Superman is expected to soar at the box office with a new media piece on Superman Day.
Following a triumphant CinemaCon, what remains for James Gunn’s Superman project now is another trailer to excite the devoted comic book enthusiasts. Regrettably, the wait goes on.
I was absolutely thrilled to share that the first glimpse of Superman, unveiled on December 19, 2024, garnered an astounding 250 million views, making it the most-watched DC film teaser and one of the top five trailers in general. Just recently at CinemaCon, the excitement around this movie reached new heights as we showed a special sneak peek of a highly anticipated scene from the original teaser – Superman bleeding in the snow, calling out to Krypto for aid. In a thrilling five-minute clip, the Fortress of Solitude emerges from the ice, and the Kryptonian robots hasten to accelerate Superman’s recovery. Get ready, as come July 11, we will all have the opportunity to witness David Corenswet as our new Man of Steel, Rachel Brosnahan portraying Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult embodying Lex Luthor, and a host of other superheroes, including Isabela Merced’s Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardener/Green Lantern, Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific/Micheal Holt, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho. I can hardly wait!
As a movie enthusiast, I was eagerly anticipating the release of a new full-length trailer for an upcoming film, with many speculating that it would drop on April 18 (Superman Day). However, as mentioned by DC Film News on X, James Gunn clarified on Instagram that all we’ll get is five minutes of footage at CinemaCon, with the possibility of a second trailer to follow later. In simpler terms, since we’ve already seen a snippet in theaters, it means there will be a pause before any further updates.
Is There Reason to Worry About Superman’s Marketing Strategy?
Birds of Prey’s Poor Marketing and Subsequent Consequences Ring A Bell
Instead of the traditional Hollywood approach, where at least two trailers and a teaser are released before marketing campaigns begin for a blockbuster movie, the upcoming “Superman” film is taking a different tactic. Unlike Matt Reeves’ “The Batman,” which revealed its first teaser a year early and followed with additional trailers and ads months before release, the new “Superman” has been sparing with pre-release glimpses. This could be due to the significant responsibility of introducing the freshly created DC Universe and a Superman film without Henry Cavill, as well as the need for careful marketing given its close approach to the cinema debut. Every chance to generate excitement and shape public opinion should be seized, considering the unique situation.
The DCEU movie, “Birds of Prey,” serves as a demonstration of what may occur when a marketing team lacks proficiency in their role. However, it’s important to note that the Blue Boy Scout is not universally recognized as the Clown Princess of Crime. Despite being launched close to Marvel’s anticipated “Fantastic Four: First Steps,” Superman is expected to be the film to surpass expectations.
At present, there is only one certainty – Warner Bros. is commemorating Superman’s Day this Friday. We might see a new poster or simply another image. Whatever promotional strategy directors James Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran have planned, it had better be impressive when Superman takes flight to theaters on July 11.
