Without any prior announcement, there were rumors in late 2024 that a game from Supermassive Games, set in the well-loved Blade Runner universe, had been canceled. If this is accurate, it would mark the second science fiction intellectual property project for Supermassive Games, following their 2012 release of Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock.
For over a decade now, I’ve been captivated by Supermassive Games and their unparalleled contributions to the horror genre. From “Until Dawn” and “The Quarry”, they’ve crafted chilling experiences that keep me on edge. Plus, seeing renowned talents like Rami Malek, Will Poulter, and Ashley Tisdale grace their projects is always a treat.
What really sets Supermassive apart though, is their consistency in releasing games under the “The Dark Pictures Anthology” series since 2019, with five unique entries so far. In intriguing news, it was recently unveiled that they had been secretly working on a “Blade Runner” game, but unfortunately, it was shelved before seeing the light of day.
Blade Runner: Time to Live, a third-person action-adventure game developed by Supermassive Games, faced cancellation last year due to conflicts with Alcon Entertainment, according to Insider Gaming. The report revealed that the game was designed around characters and cinematics, boasting approximately 10–12 hours of single-player story content that interwove the philosophical ideas of Blade Runner with fast-paced action-adventure gameplay. Players would control So-Lange, an older Nexus-6 model in 2065, navigating through New Zurich 2065 after getting stranded in a dangerous scenario. The game’s primary gameplay elements were combat, stealth, exploration, and investigation, with intense character interactions featuring deep, impactful, and emotional dialogue. Key themes included utilizing technology for investigations, using memories to construct the narrative, and enhancing skills and capabilities.
Supermassive’s Blade Runner Game was Reportedly Axed
The game titled “Blade Runner: Time to Live” aimed for a release in September 2027 on platforms including PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and the upcoming Gen 10 PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Supermassive Games, known for their work on “Until Dawn”, had set aside approximately $45 million for the project, not including costs related to image rights, performer fees, original music, quality assurance, testing, localization, or potential expansions. Out of this sum, a significant portion of $9 million was earmarked specifically for performance capture and actor-related expenses. It was also disclosed that the game, praised as “quite impressive” by an insider, commenced pre-production in September 2024 under the guidance of the developers of “The Quarry”. According to initial plans, this phase was due to end in March 2025, with prototypes following in September.
Luckily, Supermassive Games plans to launch several games in 2025, starting with. One of these is the survival horror game titled “Directive 8020”, planned for release on October 2, 2025. Additionally, the long-awaited horror platformer game, “Little Nightmares 3”, will also be released this year. Originally slated for 2024, its launch was postponed, but it’s finally set to arrive in 202x.
