Summary
- Bossa Games, the developer behind Surgeon Simulator and I Am Bread, is facing its second round of layoffs in two years.
- A number of employees at the company are set to be let go amid a major restructuring.
Bossa Games, known for creating the widely-played surgical simulation game “Surgeon Simulator,” is implementing job cuts as part of a significant company reorganization and adjustment of their development plan. It’s uncertain at this time how many team members might be affected. This is not the first time layoffs have occurred; in fact, it marks the second round in the last two years. Bossa Games aims to expand its game portfolio by focusing more on creating new titles for the public.
The game, titled Surgeon Simulator, sparked excitement within the gaming world upon release, standing out as a highly sought-after title among online influencers due to its distinctive control system and exaggerated humor that set it apart from other games. Later, the developers at Bossa Games introduced the game to virtual reality platforms and mobile devices. They then extended their collection with additional games like the equally popular simulator title I Am Bread.
Currently, Bossa Games is experiencing its second round of layoffs within two years, as stated in a recent LinkedIn post by co-CEO Henrique Olifers. This means that several employees at the company will be terminated as part of a significant restructuring process. The exact number of employees affected was not specified, but Olifers attributed the layoffs to a major transformation in the gaming industry necessitating a reduction in staff size.
Bossa Games’ Future Is Unclear Amid More Layoffs
In the past year, Boss Games experienced a comparable predicament when it had to let go of 19 staff members due to what they called a “perfect storm” of circumstances such as escalating production expenses and a thriving gaming industry. Despite these challenges, the company has managed to persist in the current gaming landscape, albeit with a relatively low output of games. The latest significant game release from Boss Games, the physics-based adventure title “I Am Fish“, was launched as recently as 2021.
Although it remains uncertain about Bossa Games’ future, the developer continues to push forward with their development strategies, having several upcoming projects planned for the next few years. However, with NetEase, one of the company’s significant investors, withdrawing its support, Bossa may need to secure alternative funding or adjust their release schedule as a result – a factor that could potentially explain the recent layoffs.
Instead of sharing details about its upcoming projects, it seems that Bossa Studios is planning to move towards smaller teams who will work concurrently on multiple projects. However, given their previous works like Surgeon Simulator and I Am Bread, fans can anticipate similar humor and gameplay styles in future releases as the studio aims to deliver fresh gaming experiences.
