In 2024, the Meta Quest 3S emerged as Amazon’s top-selling console of the year, surpassing heavyweights like Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. This is quite a feat for the virtual reality headset, considering it was only released in October that year.

The less expensive version of the Meta Quest 3, called the Meta Quest 3S, offers a substantial price reduction at the cost of slightly lower specifications. Despite virtual reality gaming yet to become widely popular among gamers, the affordable pricing and variety of games available have made the Meta Quest 3S a top-seller on Amazon in 2024.

2024’s Amazon bestseller rankings show that the Meta Quest 3S emerged as the top-selling console within the video game sector. It ranked 11th overall among all video games for the year, with gift cards, Xbox Game Pass subscriptions, and other items taking most of the spots. The PlayStation 5 Slim came in at #17, while the Nintendo Switch was at #53. Interestingly, no Xbox consoles were included in the top 80 listings, but their accessories did appear. The PlayStation 5 Pro was not featured on the list either. Only two items outranked the Meta Quest 3S: a Nintendo-branded microSDXC card and the PlayStation DualSense wireless controller, which took positions #8 and #9 respectively.

Meta Quest 3S Makes Virtual Reality More Accessible Than Ever

Regrettably, Sony’s upcoming VR device, PlayStation VR 2, isn’t included on Amazon’s list. Compared to PSVR’s collection of great games, the Meta Quest 3S offers a more attractive option since it doesn’t require any external hardware. This means users can enjoy the freedom of movement while using the Meta Quest 3S, unlike the PlayStation VR which is tethered. Moreover, purchasers don’t need to invest in a potent console or PC to operate the device with the Meta Quest 3S, as it stands alone.

It’s worth noting that the Meta Quest 2 ranked 27th, while the original Meta Quest 3 didn’t even make it to the top 80. This could suggest that VR users prefer devices when they are priced more affordably. As the Meta Quest 2 has been discontinued and the Nintendo Switch 2 is slated for release in 2025, we’ll see how next year’s list changes. If Nintendo can replicate the success of its original Switch, it’s likely to lead Amazon video game sales for that year. Only time will reveal what will be at the top in 2025, but the current trends hint that virtual reality interest is gradually growing.
