Surprising PlayStation Portal Update Offers Cloud Streaming Beta

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I must admit that Sony’s latest move with PlayStation Portal has piqued my interest. Being a long-time PlayStation enthusiast, I’ve seen it evolve from a humble console to a powerhouse of gaming goodness. The cloud streaming update, albeit in beta, promises to bring the magic of PS5 games right into my living room, even if I don’t own one.

I’m not into bingo, so I didn’t have a card for this occasion, but it looks like Sony is encouraging gamers to play more video games within their system. To accomplish this, they’re releasing an update for the PlayStation Portal today. This update features cloud streaming, which is currently in beta and will support up to 120 PlayStation 5 titles from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog. However, you’ll need a PS+ Premium subscription to experience these games at a resolution of 1080p and a frame rate of 60 per second. Isn’t that swanky?

As mentioned on the PlayStation Blog, the beta phase offers several accessible features, some yet to be released, and various spots for testing the cloud streaming beta. Let’s dive right in!

These countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the United States.

Beta Features

Regarding the upcoming features for the PlayStation Portal cloud streaming beta, here’s what you can expect to experience:

  • Stream select PS5 games in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog
    • Over 120 PS5 games from the PS Plus Game Catalog, including Dave the Diver, Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Monster Hunter Rise, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, will be accessible on PS Portal via cloud streaming*
  • Streaming up to 1080p/60fps**
  • DualSense wireless controller features, including haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, speakers, touchpad (emulated on the touch screen for PS Portal), and motion sensor***
  • PlayStation Plus Cloud storage
    • Save data and game progress can be stored up to 100GB and will be automatically synced with your PS5 console, making it easy to switch seamlessly between local and streaming gameplay, and between multiple devices.

How to Join the Cloud Streaming Beta

To join the beta, you’ll need a few essentials: an active PlayStation Network account, an up-to-date PS+ Premium subscription, reliable high-speed internet connection, and the PlayStation Portal. Once you have all these ready, you can download the latest update and enable cloud streaming by accessing:

  1. Open “Quick Menu” and access “Settings” on your PS Portal.
  2. Select the “Cloud Streaming (Beta)” button
  3. Switch the Cloud Streaming (Beta) toggle on (this will be off by default).

As stated in the blog, several exciting features such as Game Trials, party voice chat, creating content, 3D audio, and in-game purchases won’t be immediately accessible during this beta phase.

Regarding Sony and PlayStation, have you come across the rumor that they’re considering acquiring FromSoftware’s current corporation? Could it possibly lead to the production of Bloodborne 2?
