Surviving Mars Relaunched Beginner Tips

Surviving Mars Relaunched is a challenging city-building simulation where you establish a self-sufficient colony on Mars. Before you even land, you’ll start by choosing the right commander profile back on Earth, and then carefully selecting the ideal landing site from orbit.

Okay, so I’ve been playing Surviving Mars: Relaunched and figured I’d share some things I wish I knew when I started. This isn’t just about what the tutorial tells you, but the little tricks to get a really fast start. I’ll cover the best way to set things up before you even begin, and how to make sure your first few days – what I call the Founder Phase – go smoothly. Basically, I’m giving you the head start I wish I had!

Best Commander Profiles For Beginners

  • Geo Engineer:
    • Seeds Import Cost Reduced by 50%
    • Bonus Prefabs: 2x GHG Factory, 2x Forestation Plants
    • Bonus Tech: Designed Forestation (Newly grown forests have a chance to spawn Vistas and Research Sites)

This profile is one of the quickest ways to transform Mars into a green, thriving planet. It also excels at managing the mental and moral challenges that come with such a massive undertaking. Once you begin terraforming, there’s no going back – Mars’ landscape will be permanently altered.

Certain sponsors may disagree with this project, particularly those who prioritize profit from mining or technological advancements.

Importing seeds is now cheaper, allowing players to develop Mars as a tourist destination more quickly, which will boost profits. The goal is to make the colony profitable and self-sufficient as quickly as possible. Here’s how choosing this option…

  • City Mayor:
    • 2000 M Additional Starting Funds
    • Buildings require upkeep less often
    • Bonus Tech: Mars Noveau (building costs in Metals & Concrete are reduced by 20%)

This Profile is good for new players, giving them more starting funds for missions. It also lowers building costs significantly with a special technology only available on Mars Noveau.

This profile not only lowers maintenance costs, but also builds momentum throughout the game, making it excellent for developing large settlements. Players will be able to progress to the Capital stage much more quickly with this option.

  • Spelunker;
    • Colonists regain Sanity when in the Underground instead of Losing It.
    • Bonus Prefabs: 1x Elevators, 2x Drone Hub Extenders
    • Bonus Tech: Underground Domes (Unlocks Basic and Micro Underground Domes)

This guide is for adventurers seeking wealth beneath the surface of Mars. The Martian Undergrounds offer valuable resources and shelter from hazards like sandstorms, meteors, and extreme temperatures.

Getting elevators and underground domes up and running quickly gives you a big head start in building an underground colony. Plus, the bonus that improves colonist sanity while working underground is incredibly important. This is the quickest way to build a successful mining colony.

Location Is Everything: Use Your Probes To Explore Quadrants Before Settling In

Starting a new game in Surviving Mars Relaunched can be tough. Each map is different with uneven ground and resources spread all over, making it hard to decide where to build. Luckily, there’s a quick way to set up a small base and start searching for essential supplies like Concrete, Metals, Water, Anomalies, and Precious Metals.

  1. Set as many Obrital Probes to scan the quadrants, and Press (+) to accelerate time.
  2. In the meantime, land in the revealed quadrants, and build a proto base (basic Wind and Solar generators).
  3. Build a Sensor Tower, and use the RC Explorer Rover to reach new locations.
  4. Find the ideal flat surface with nearby resource nodes, and establish a colony there.

Okay, so here’s the deal with my drones: they need to be within range of either my Commander Rover or a Drone Hub to get their regular maintenance. It’s super important to keep an eye on how many drones each one can handle though, because you really don’t want any drones getting left out in the cold – those become ‘orphaned’ and don’t get fixed up!

Priority Building & Salvaging: Start Small, Then Go Big

Establishing a long-term settlement on Mars will be incredibly difficult. The game Surviving Mars Relaunched reflects this complexity, requiring players to manage numerous details. A key, though often unstated, strategy for success is prioritizing which structures to build first.

Before bringing in colonists, players should plan carefully and collect necessary resources. They can start with a self-sufficient drone base for a period of time before officially establishing a colony with the first colonists.

First, focus on building structures for Energy and Resources. Next, set up a supply line using Drones and Rovers, and clear the surrounding area of debris while collecting Metals.

Often, it’s best to find a new location first (as highlighted in ‘Location Is Everything’) before building a Dome. The best type of Dome to build is a Self-Sustained Dome, because it will automatically construct everything needed to make it livable – except for the inside structures and power source.

Okay, so next up, I’m really excited to build the core life support systems! I need to get a Water Facility going, plus some Energy production, Oxygen generation, and Water Storage. Then, it’s all about connecting everything with Pipes and Cables to make sure it all works together. I’m also clearing some space near the dome for a Fuel and Polymer Refiner – that seems super important. Once all of that’s set up, I can finally call in my first Colonists and officially start the Founder phase – can’t wait!
