Surviving the Infection: Resident Evil’s Unlikely Heroes and Their Dark Secrets!

Summary

  • Characters like Jill Valentine, Claire Redfield, and Leon S. Kennedy were able to survive lethal viral infections in the Resident Evil series.
  • Some characters avoided turning into monsters by managing fear levels or avoiding infected substances.
  • Survival often came with side effects, like regenerative powers or susceptibility to control.

As a gamer, I’ve found myself deep within the chilling world of Resident Evil, where the air is thick with terrifying viruses and illnesses that can transform an ordinary person into a monstrous terror in the blink of an eye. Yet, it’s not always instant transformation – sometimes, these viruses take their sweet time, leading to incredibly rare cases where characters somehow manage to survive the ordeal. But even then, they often carry lingering aftereffects that haunt them long after the threat has passed.

In the universe of Resident Evil, many main characters barely survive a deadly virus infection. Interestingly, some supporting characters and even villains have also managed to live past it. Being infected in this world is often synonymous with death, but these characters show that survival is not always impossible.

8. Jill Valentine

Jill Would Have Been Burnt To A Crisp With The Rest Of Raccoon City If Carlos Hadn’t Cured Her

As Jill makes her daring exit from Raccoon City, it appears she might succeed, but then disaster strikes: a monstrous creature named Nemesis begins pursuing her, and she contracts the T-Virus. Managing to stay awake for a short while, Jill eventually faints, forcing Carlos into a desperate dash through Raccoon City Hospital in search of an antidote.

If Jill had not crossed paths with Carlos, it’s highly probable she would have turned into a mindless zombie and been among the countless destroyed by the nuclear explosion. Luckily, Carlos’ bravery prevented this, giving her enough time to regain her footing before confronting Nemesis and bringing an end to the horror for good.

7. Claire Redfield

Claire Managed To Keep Her Fear Levels To A Minimum To Avoid Becoming A Mutant

In just a few minutes of the narrative in Revelations 2, Claire and her TerraSave team members find themselves abducted and transported to a puzzling island. It’s later revealed that they have all been exposed to the T-Phobos Virus, a distinctive virus within the series. What makes this virus intriguing is that it becomes active based on the host’s stress levels. Minimal stress can transform an individual into a superhuman, but if they experience genuine fear, they may either perish instantly or mutate into a bloodthirsty creature.

Given all the harrowing experiences Claire had encountered prior, she managed to control her fear effectively, enabling her to exit the island without succumbing to its influence. It remains uncertain if Claire is still infected or not, but it appears that this won’t pose a significant problem for Claire in the time ahead.

6. Albert Wesker

Wesker Was Able To Obtain Superhuman Powers By Injecting Himself With An Experimental Virus

Beyond the initial contest, Wesker is consistently portrayed as a near-supernatural character, boasting extraordinary strength and agility. His transformation into this state is attributed to self-administering an unidentified virus, often referred to by fans as the ‘Experimental Virus’, towards the climax of the first game. This not only resurrected Wesker but also bestowed upon him powers that led him to believe he was a divine entity, deserving of dominion over the mere mortals populating the world.

In an unusual twist for video game lore, this virus didn’t instantly wipe me out when it invaded my system. Consequently, good old Wesker managed to survive for quite some time after gaining superhuman abilities, ultimately meeting his end not from the virus but from a devastating rocket blast instead.

5. Mia Winters

Mia Was One Of Several Victims Who Succumbed To Eveline’s Mold

In the beginning of Resident Evil 7, there’s a chilling video message from Mia, Ethan’s wife, urging him to keep his distance from the Louisiana mansion where she’s been held captive. Despite her warning, Ethan decides to venture in on a rescue mission. However, he soon discovers that Mia has transformed into a terrifying monster, eager to rip her husband apart with whatever tools she can find.

To put it simply, Mia and the rest of the Baker family contracted mold due to Eveline’s arrival and subsequent stay in their home, which caused the mold to spread. Fortunately, Ethan was able to create a solution that lessened the impact of the mold, enabling him and Mia to enjoy some time together, albeit for a brief period.

4. Zoe Baker

Zoe’s Reaction To Eveline’s Mold Was A Little Different From Her Family

Despite contracting the infection at the same time as her family following Eveline’s arrival, Zoe managed to resist transforming into a monster like them by adopting distinct strategies. Unlike her family who were compelled to consume tainted food and drink, Zoe refrained from doing so, and she isolated herself in an external trailer to minimize their impact on her.

Some viewers speculate that Zoe might have secretly been self-administering medication as a means to delay the advancement of the Mold infection, although this notion isn’t explicitly supported within “Resident Evil 7.” Despite the infection eventually taking its toll on her, reaching advanced stages, her uncle Joe bravely navigates through a swamp teeming with monsters in an attempt to find a cure for Zoe. By doing so, he successfully saves her life.

3. Sherry Birkin

After Surviving The G-Virus Embryo, Sherry Would Possess Regenerative Healing Powers

As a child, Sherry found herself in the midst of the Raccoon City catastrophe, with her parents, William and Annette, seemingly deserting her amidst the chaos. Tragically, after William transformed into a rampaging creature because of a G-Virus mutation, he implanted an embryo of the same virus in Sherry, as she proved to be the most suitable host.

Given her age, Sherry’s physical condition found it challenging to combat the virus, causing her to lose consciousness during the second half of the game. It wasn’t until Claire managed to rescue her that she regained consciousness. However, as depicted in Resident Evil 6, Sherry developed regenerative healing abilities due to the persistent G-Virus cells in her system. So, despite the harrowing ordeal, it appears that one character in this series gained a unique advantage from their infection.

2. Ashley Graham

Saddler’s Control Over Ashley Becomes Stronger The Further The Las Plagas Develops

In Resident Evil 4, Saddler’s masterful scheme involves infecting Ashley with the Las Plagas parasites. Once infected, Ashley would be sent back to America where she could then transmit the infection to the president, thereby weakening America’s global influence. In the original game, it is hinted that Saddler can subtly manipulate Ashley as the plaga grows, but this manipulation is more overt in the remake, with Ashley displaying signs of brainwashing, such as stabbing Leon and mocking him at one point.

Throughout the game, Saddler repeatedly employed a strategy to rescue Ashley, but it was ultimately Leon who managed to save her, thanks to information provided by Luis. To clarify, it was Luis who supplied both Leon and Ashley with the necessary medication to combat the plaga before they reached his lab at the game’s end.

1. Leon S. Kennedy

The ‘Big Cheese’ Administers Las Plagas Into Leon’s Body, Making His Mission A Whole Lot More Complicated

During Leon’s quest to rescue Ashley, it doesn’t take long before Mendez, the village leader, confronts him. In their encounter, Mendez knocks Leon unconscious and injects him with a parasite called Las Plagas. Initially, Leon doesn’t notice any changes, but after fighting Del Lago, he starts coughing up blood and experiencing strange hallucinations where he imagines transforming into one of the numerous Ganado enemies he’s been battling throughout this mission.

This parasite significantly increases the complexity of Leon’s task, as he not only has to rescue Ashley but also discover a cure for her and himself to ensure their safe return home. Being the noble hero he is, Leon was prepared to prioritize Ashley’s healing first. Fortunately, he was able to extract the parasite himself before he became one of Saddler’s followers during their journey’s end.
