Rumors suggest a better version of Splatoon 3 might be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2. This comes from a recent rating update shared online. However, Nintendo hasn’t officially said whether Splatoon 3 will receive any special improvements beyond the free update it already released for the Switch in June.
Since launching in September 2022, Splatoon 3 has become a popular online game for Nintendo, attracting a loyal fanbase with its distinctive art style. It’s become the best-selling Splatoon game ever, with over 11.9 million copies sold worldwide in just two years. Although the final major in-game event, the Splatfest in September 2024, has concluded, Nintendo continues to bring back seasonal events for new players. Even though full support for the game is decreasing, Splatoon 3 still receives regular updates to its maps and bug fixes.
New Splatoon 3 Listing Could Tease Potential Switch 2 Plans
While we shouldn’t rely on unconfirmed reports, a recent update to the Splatoon 3 ratings suggests new content might be coming. The Pan European Game Information (PEGI) website now lists the game as being available on both the Switch and the Switch 2. Currently, it shows a placeholder release date of December 31, 2025, for the Switch 2 version, in addition to the original Switch release date of September 9, 2022.
While Splatoon 3 received a free update in June 2025 to work with the new Switch 2 console, the changes primarily focused on improving the game’s visuals. The 10.0.0 update also slightly reduced the graphical quality on the original Switch to ensure a fair playing field in competitive modes for all players. It’s unclear why Splatoon 3 received an updated age rating to include the Switch 2, especially since the 10.0.0 update came out six months after the rating was changed.
Recently, listings for both Pikmin 3 Deluxe and updated versions of Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Animal Crossing: New Horizons appeared in the PEGI database, all indicating support for the upcoming Switch 2 console. This suggests Nintendo is planning to release enhanced versions of existing Switch games to take advantage of the new hardware. While the Switch 2 is currently slated for a 2026 release and details are still being finalized, these listings add weight to that timeframe. Although Nintendo hasn’t confirmed a Switch 2 version of Splatoon 3, a new Splatoon project is currently in development, which fans will be eager to learn more about.
Splatoon’s Future On The Switch 2 Is Still In Development
Nintendo announced Splatoon Raiders alongside the 10.0.0 update for Splatoon 3. This new spin-off game will feature a character called The Mechanic, who will team up with Deep Cut, the band from Splatoon 3, on the Sphiralite Islands. We don’t yet know what kind of game Splatoon Raiders will be or when it will be released, so it’s unclear when Nintendo will share more details.
If you’re hoping to buy a Switch 2 to play future Nintendo games planned for 2026 and later, it’s best to act soon. A shortage of important computer components is driving up the cost of parts like RAM and SSDs, and this will likely lead to price increases for the Switch 2 and other current gaming systems in 2026. Nintendo hasn’t announced any price changes for the Switch 2 yet, but we’ll have to wait and see what they decide.
