Switch 2 Hype?! One HUGE Disappointment…

Nintendo has made a strong debut with the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2. The recent event highlighting their upcoming console was brimming with significant revelations. Not only did they confirm that Mario Kart World will be available at launch, but they also astonished everyone by disclosing that popular third-party games such as Cyberpunk 2077 can run on it. The Nintendo Switch 2 is looking to make a big splash in the gaming world for Nintendo.

For eight years now, since the initial release of the Switch, users and enthusiasts have provided ample feedback. The Switch has had a remarkable lifespan, but conversations about it often highlight the lack of features like voice chat support. Fortunately, it appears that Nintendo has taken these suggestions to heart, as the showcase revealed that the elusive C button on the Switch 2 will activate a communication feature called GameChat. However, one feature seems conspicuously absent – an official achievement system.

Achievements Have Become a Modern Gaming Staple

As a gamer, I’ve noticed that not every player gets a kick out of earning achievements, but it’s become quite common for many gamers to expect them. Over time, Nintendo has established itself as a brand that doesn’t always jump on board with trends other consoles are adopting, and the absence of an official achievement system is one of the ways they’ve chosen to stand out from the crowd. What makes the Switch 2 intriguing, though, is that it seems Nintendo might be warming up to the idea of dabbling in things beyond their usual comfort zone.

The addition of a chat button shows that Nintendo values player input and is responsive, however, the absence of achievements suggests they don’t find significant value in creating their own official achievement system at this time. It’s possible that we’ll learn more about the Switch 2 in the future, but it seems unlikely that a Nintendo-designed achievement system will be a feature again.

For a limited period, two players can enjoy GameChat at no cost. However, after March 2026, it’ll require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to access this feature.

The Switch 2 Doesn’t Have to Be Bad News For Achievement Hunters

Over time, some developers have chosen to create their own in-game reward systems, making an official Nintendo feature less essential. Games such as “Fire Emblem Engage” and “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate”, along with other Nintendo exclusives, offer alternatives that still satisfy the achievement craving. It’s expected that future Switch 2 games will follow this trend.

GameChat users can also screen share, even if they’re not playing the same game.

As we approached the Nintendo Direct event, there was some doubt about what would be presented. Fortunately, the company delivered a wealth of exciting reveals during the broadcast. Announcements such as the exclusive FromSoftware game for Switch 2 titled “The Duskbloods“, the numerous new features in Mario Kart World, and the capability for friends to share their gaming experiences via GameChat hint at a daring new era for Nintendo.

At the moment, it appears that Nintendo has no plans to develop an achievement system, yet there’s still a lot for gaming enthusiasts to look forward to. The upcoming Switch 2 release contributes significantly to this year’s bustling gaming landscape, and its arrival is certain to create quite a stir.
