Nintendo has recently exported over a million newly produced ‘Switch 2’ consoles from Vietnam to the United States, in response to increased tariffs on imports into the U.S. from other countries. Since Donald Trump was re-elected President of the United States, there have been signs that the global markets are moving towards a potential trade conflict between the U.S. and China. It appears that Nintendo is taking steps to mitigate the impact by swiftly sending its Switch 2 consoles to the U.S. as soon as possible.

During the latest Nintendo Direct presentation, it was confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 will retail at $449.99 (or $499.99 when bundled with Mario Kart World), set to hit stores on June 5. But there’s growing unease among gamers and Nintendo alike due to Trump’s imposition of tariffs on goods imported from numerous countries, such as a 47% levy on items from Vietnam and an astounding 67% tax on China-made goods. After the initial announcement, these tariffs were adjusted: most countries now face a 10% tariff for the next three months, while China’s rate has surpassed 100%.

According to a recent report by Bloomberg, Nintendo has primarily dispatched its Switch 2 consoles made in Vietnam to the U.S. since January. In fact, nearly all (100%) of the Vietnamese production was directed towards America during this period, with approximately a million units sent over in just two months. Furthermore, it’s been suggested that even more consoles have likely followed suit for March and April, given the trend set earlier.

Nintendo Reportedly Moves Switch 2 Consoles From Vietnam to the US Amid Trade War

Currently, Vietnam accounts for approximately one-third of the production of Nintendo’s Switch 2 consoles, with the majority still being produced in China as per Bloomberg. Despite this, due to concerns over tariffs, Nintendo has temporarily halted pre-orders for the Switch 2 in the United States.

The updated tariff adjustments on Trump’s policies are beneficial for Nintendo, as the Switch 2 is likely to be imported from Vietnam without excessive 47% tariffs. However, it remains uncertain whether the cost of the Switch 2 will increase in the U.S. market or not.

If Vietnam maintains a 10% tariff, Nintendo might decide to absorb the cost impact on their profit margins and keep the same prices for their upcoming Switch 2, rather than raising them further. Whether the price of the Switch 2 will stay consistent throughout 2025 remains uncertain.
