- Dennis Shirk praises Switch 2 hardware upgrades for better Civilization 7 graphics/performance.
- The console has been compared to a mid-tier PC.
- Civilization 7 on Switch 2 should perform much better than the OG Switch version.
Upgrades made to the Nintendo Switch 2, compared to its predecessor, have garnered high praise from Dennis Shirk, executive producer of Civilization 7. As a veteran developer at Firaxis Games, Shirk appears eager for players to experience his game on the Switch 2. He describes the console’s graphics and performance as being comparable to that of a mid-range PC.
It was announced during the April 2nd Nintendo Direct event that Civilization 7 is indeed coming to the Nintendo Switch 2. Initially released on various platforms, including the initial Nintendo Switch, in February, this latest installment of the 4X strategy series introduced a host of new features such as an updated Ages system and the option for players to customize their civilizations by combining different cultures and leaders.
For Shirk, who has been with Firaxis Games for the past 20 years, the forthcoming release of the new console is a source of considerable excitement. Given a report suggesting that the integration of Nvidia’s Tegra chip provides Switch 2 with approximately ten times the graphics power of its predecessor, this enthusiasm is hardly unexpected. However, Shirk has gone a step further in expressing his feelings, as he recently shared with Stephen Totillo of GameFile the impressive performance enhancements he has witnessed while working on the Switch 2 version of their game. In that interview, he explained, “We’ve managed to make it look like a mid-tier PC, because it’s got enough power.” Additionally, he mentioned that the development team was particularly pleased with how well the game runs on Switch 2.
Civilization 7 Should Run Much Better on Switch 2
Initially launched in early February, the strategy game ‘Civilization 7’ received mostly positive reviews from critics. However, player feedback on the game has been varied. Critics across all platforms have mainly focused on the absence of beloved features from previous series installments. On Nintendo Switch, players have reported severe performance issues that lead to crashes and lengthy wait times between turns. Some users claim they have had to opt for smaller maps or fewer civilizations to prevent overloading the hardware. Despite these technical problems, the convenience of playing ‘Civilization 7’ on-the-go has been praised by many. Therefore, improving its performance is expected to be greatly appreciated.
Apart from visual and speed improvements, there are additional enhancements in store for the game. In collaboration with lead designer and programmer Ed Beach, Shirk has commended the potential of the Joy-Con mouse functions on the yet-to-be-officially confirmed Switch 2. For a series that predominantly thrives on PC, having a stock controller double as a mouse could significantly simplify navigation within the UI of Civilization 7 for Switch 2 users.
