2021 saw one of its best surprises with Tails of Iron, a game that quickly climbed my list of favorite releases for the year due to its intense combat and captivating narrative. The sequel, Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter, has maintained this quality, boasting a story on par with Game of Thrones and The Witcher, while enhancing the combat mechanics to be more immersive and thrilling. Who would have thought that a game featuring rodents in a dark fantasy world could turn out so well?
Following an extraordinary prologue where your entire dwelling is devastated by a fresh menace called the Dark Wings, Arlo finds himself on a quest for vengeance over his father’s death and assuming the role of the new Guardian of the Wastelands. It’s astonishing how a dialogue-less game manages to endear characters so deeply, but I was completely hooked on Arlo’s adventure, finding each new revelation as exhilarating as the last. This emotional connection is further strengthened by Doug Cockle, renowned for his voice acting as Geralt in The Witcher series, providing the narrative throughout, imbuing the story with a sense of importance and weight.
As a devoted admirer, I’d say the world in this game is exquisitely hand-crafted, boasting landscapes spanning from snow-capped peaks to dense woodlands and dilapidated towns. Each locale brims with such intricate detail, but what truly brings them to life are the delightful nuances given to every character. You’ll meet a myriad of characters and races in this adventure, yet there’s no shortage of formidable foes and bosses that take your breath away. Odd Bug Studio really hit it out of the park with their first creation, but with Whiskers of Winter, they’ve surpassed themselves entirely.
In this updated version, the fights are more intense, powerful, and quick-reacting than ever before. Each hit feels substantial yet swift, while dodging, parrying, and blocking have become even more responsive. Some of the bosses can be tough to conquer, but by learning their patterns and movements, you can utilize the precise controls to surmount any hurdle. If you find yourself struggling with the difficulty level, there’s an option to adjust it (or increase it if you crave a greater challenge), but the medium setting offers a well-balanced experience.
In Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter, you’ll find numerous chances to enhance your equipment and create new items. By vanquishing larger beasts, you can gather their remains for precious resources. You can design various gear sets and switch them on the spot depending on the situation as well. Some adversaries may employ toxic or elemental attacks (such as fire and ice), but different armor sets offer resistance to these damaging elements. Additionally, you can craft stronger swords, spears, axes, crossbows, and more, helping you create your ultimate collection of weapons.
You’ve got the option to enhance your village too, which grants you superior equipment from the blacksmiths and more nourishing food from the kitchen, providing extra bonuses. This not only strengthens Arlo as you move nearer to the Dark Wings, but also fosters a sense of unity with your people, intensifying the game’s tension. Earlier, I shared that you gradually grow fond of the characters, particularly Arlo, who has won my affection deeply. Although some dialogues can be tricky to comprehend due to tiny images in speech bubbles, Lord Cockle simplifies these exchanges, making them more understandable.
In addition to the main storyline, there are optional missions for you in Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter, such as taking on bigger beasts in monster contracts. These encounters reward you with valuable resources and gold. As you invest more time in upgrading, the tasks become less demanding, but make no mistake – this game is not a leisurely stroll. Each adversary you face is formidable, displaying aggressive attack patterns that are both swift and deliberate. For some, this may be too tough, but I found it exhilarating and enjoyed every moment of it.
Tails of Iron 2: Frost’s Fury Sequel
Tails of Iron 2: Frost’s Fury Sequel stands out as an enhanced sequel that surpasses the first game in all aspects. The battle sequences remain as intense, yet the controls have been refined for a smoother gaming experience. A fresh addition, the whetstone, offers increased damage potential.
Throughout your journey, you’ll encounter a variety of weapons, traps, and extraordinary abilities that will assist you. Upgrades provide flexibility in handling diverse enemy types, monsters, and bosses. The game boasts a rich narrative and visually stunning landscapes, making it an engaging title to explore.
