Omega 6: The Triangle Stars is the first original game created by gaming legend Takaya Imamura, who spent three decades at Nintendo as one of its prominent artists. Imamura’s artwork is easily identifiable to anyone who has held a game controller over the past few decades, having designed Captain Falcon from F-Zero, the masked protagonist of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, and numerous iconic characters in Star Fox.
Following his stint at Nintendo, Imamura had the opportunity to create his personal science fiction comic book titled “Omega 6“. Inspired by the playful spirit of weekend cartoons, Imamura believed that the traditional point-and-click adventure style would be an ideal method to transform the comic into a video game. In an interview with Game Rant, Imamura discussed his journey at Nintendo leading up to the creation of “Omega 6“, which he considered as a full circle moment from his job interview at Nintendo back in 1989.
Takaya Imamura Wasn’t Held Back At Nintendo
Despite spending three decades at Nintendo, Imamura acknowledged that “Omega 6: The Triangle Stars” wasn’t a result of any creative constraints within the company. Instead, it seems Nintendo’s generous creative liberties played a significant role in the birth of so many iconic designs. It’s also worth mentioning that his own game might have flourished even more under the unrestricted environment of independent game development. Imamura pondered on this thought.
At Nintendo, I had a great deal of freedom; the environment was quite permissive. In essence, I was given the liberty to pursue my ideas without much restraint. Put simply, there wasn’t a heavy hand guiding me in my work.
To be honest, drawing manga wasn’t primarily about relieving stress for me, rather it was an artistic avenue I hadn’t explored while I was still with Nintendo. It served as my means of creative expression instead.
Reflecting on it, if you are a member of either the Mario development crew or the Zelda development crew, you find yourself working on those iconic games over numerous years.
Over the years, I’ve worked on a wide variety of projects, from diverse genres, series, and character roles. Perhaps my unique style made it difficult for them to pigeonhole me into a single project. I can’t say for certain though.
Recently, indie studios established by former AAA developers have been springing up more frequently, often due to dissatisfaction with the corporate environment of top-tier game development. However, it seems that Imamura’s independent gaming venture does not follow this trend. Despite gaining some freedoms upon leaving Nintendo, he doesn’t feel his creativity was previously limited.
Omega 6: The Triangle Stars is a Full-Circle Moment for Takaya Imamura

The source of inspiration behind the youthful sci-fi journey depicted in “Omega 6” was Imamura’s lifelong passion for science fiction. He mentioned films such as “Star Wars” and “Silent Running” as significant influences, and during a job interview with Shigeru Miyamoto, he expressed his fondness for the sci-fi game “Metroid.” In fact, Imamura often referred to “Metroid” as his favorite Nintendo game. This passion for science fiction was also evident when discussing the creation of “Omega 6”.
As a child, I developed a fondness for science fiction movies like Star Wars, and over the years, these films have influenced me in an indirect yet significant way, as there’s nothing specific I drew inspiration from directly.
In simpler terms, during an interview at Nintendo, I presented a sci-fi comic to Miyamoto-san, which served as the foundation for what has evolved into the concept of Omega 6, as it exists now.
It’s quite poignant that the concept for a manga, which he used to land his destined role at Nintendo, would later become the basis for his first original game after retiring from that position. Although Omega 6: The Triangle Stars is designed to evoke nostalgia in gamers, it might stir up equally powerful feelings of nostalgia for the artist who conceived it long ago.
