Reports indicate that about 30% of the workforce at Cloud Chamber, the development studio working on the upcoming BioShock title, has been let go by Take-Two Interactive.
For over a decade, the next installment of BioShock had been under development, slated for release towards the end of 2026 or the beginning of 2027. However, due to certain considerations, it appears that the release has been pushed back again, with developers opting to provide the game additional time for refinement.
Over 80 positions were eliminated as part of the changes, leaving approximately 250 employees prior to the job cuts – this constitutes a significant proportion of the entire workforce.
1/3 of BioShock Studio Axed
According to information provided by Jason Schreier at Bloomberg, it has been revealed that an email from 2K President David Ismailer mentioned a choice to revise key elements essential to a BioShock title.
Instead, let me rephrase that for you: To dedicate more time to this project, we decided to streamline our team by reducing its size, even though BioShock has been under development for a significant amount of time, ranking it among some of the lengthiest productions in gaming.
The conceptualization for the subsequent BioShock game started in 2014, following the release of BioShock Infinite. However, there were considerable shifts as Irrational Games, initially leading the project, disbanded after Ken Levine’s departure to establish a smaller studio under Take-Two Interactive.
According to Bloomberg’s report, the problems didn’t stop at that point. Instead, Certain Affinity stepped in and continued working on the game for about two years. However, a deal to buy Certain Affinity failed to materialize. As a result, Take-Two Interactive made the decision to establish an internal studio to manage the project, which ultimately became Cloud Chamber, hiring staff for it in 2017.
The current plans for the next BioShock game aren’t entirely clear yet, and it seems that fans may have to wait quite some time before its release, as the delay appears to be ongoing.
