Video games have been revamped and enhanced since the early days of gaming, including my very first game experience as a child. That initial game was actually a remastered version. The Super Mario All Stars on SNES compiled four NES Mario games with polished graphics, providing me, a younger version of myself, an excellent opportunity to enjoy those classic games on my new console. However, with the increasing number of remasters today, it can be confusing when a less captivating game in a series receives a straightforward upgrade. Tales of Graces f Remastered is one such example, but if you didn’t catch this good entry in a fantastic series before, now might be your chance to make an impression.
First released on Wii in 2009, Tales of Graces was later remade and enhanced with additional content like a new chapter and extras when it came to PS5 three years ago. Now returning for a newer audience, Tales of Graces f Remastered will resonate with fans of the series whether they’ve experienced it before or not.
Initially, our main characters, Asbel and Hubert, who hail from a humble village named Lhant, are portrayed as children. On an exciting escapade, they encounter a girl with amnesia named Sophie. They take her in and make efforts to understand her origins. During their journey, they cross paths with the young royalty of a neighboring kingdom and form a friendship. However, this seemingly idyllic scenario takes a grim turn when a beast assaults them during a rendezvous. Heartbreakingly, Sophie gives up her life to protect them. This selfless act forces Asbel to flee his home, while Hubert is adopted into a distinguished family, marking the end of their carefree childhood days.
Seven years later, I find myself in a world where everyone has undergone significant changes. Despite our differences, we’re united in a battle against the villains. Interestingly, Sophie, who was believed to be deceased, is still very much alive and seemingly ageless. With our reunion, we embark on an exciting journey across the globe, gathering vibrant companions as we go. Initially, when I played this game back in 2012, it seemed like a predictable JRPG plot, but that doesn’t diminish my enjoyment of it one bit.
A more significant concern than the plot of Tales of Graces f seems to be the characters, who might be described as lacking depth. Each character you encounter feels like a stereotype, such as the love interest who hesitates to express her feelings for Asbel, or the seasoned older warrior and the comical sidekick. It’s challenging not to compare them unfavorably to the captivating cast of Tales of Arise, which, while it may not be entirely fair, is where my thoughts often drift when considering the Tales series.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but focus on the exhilarating combat that Tales of Graces F offers, even though its narrative might not be the most captivating. Similar to other titles in the series, the action is fast-paced and engaging, with the gameplay centered around the Chain Capacity (CC). This system allows for the deployment of potent weapon-based and magic-based attacks.
The combat system offers a gradually expanding and personalized combo tree that lets you explore various applications for your swift sword strikes. When coupled with thrilling burst attacks, you’ll find yourself becoming an unstoppable force to reckon with. Even by today’s standards, the game’s combat remains exceptional, and after countless hours spent in battle, my enthusiasm never waned.
The battle system offers an appealing level of complexity, enriched by various features such as status effects and tactical cooking during combat. These elements are skillfully introduced at a gradual pace. Additionally, character development is captivating since it revolves around acquiring new titles that enhance stats and abilities over time. Titles can be earned either through story advancement or exceptional performance in battles. It’s rewarding to acquire a new title, making the experience more immersive than traditional character upgrades. I find the connection between titles and each party member intriguing, adding an extra layer of personalization to the gameplay.
In non-combat situations, you’ll find yourself wandering through largely vacant areas. Dungeons, with their labyrinthine passages, can be tricky to navigate, and without the recent addition of an objective marker, I believe they would have annoyed me immensely. Fortunately, the Tales series standard of being able to dodge enemies while seeking hidden loot is included, and although this feature is fairly standard in RPGs today, it wasn’t a certainty back in 2009.
Beyond enhanced graphics and minor upgrades, the remastered version of Tales of Graces f primarily focuses on enhancing user experience. Features such as automatic saves, battle encounter toggles, and a sprint button are all beneficial additions that make gameplay smoother. However, those hoping for significant additional content may find it lacking.
I’ve talked about several problems I encountered with Tales of Graces f Remastered previously, but overall, it’s a game that offers a lot of enjoyment. It harks back to an era when JRPGs were just straightforward fun, and although it occasionally made me shake my head, I found myself appreciating the humorous exchanges between the characters.
Although Tales of Graces f Remastered may not offer the most innovative role-playing game experience compared to modern titles, its engaging combat system makes it worth trying out. If you’re prepared for stereotypical characters and a straightforward storyline, this game promises an enjoyable journey filled with familiar tropes.
