As a seasoned RPG enthusiast and long-time fan of the Tales series, I can confidently say that it is high time for some of its older titles to receive a much-deserved facelift through remasters. Having played numerous games from this beloved franchise since their initial releases, I can attest to the timeless stories, engaging gameplay mechanics, and memorable characters that have made these games stand out in the crowded RPG landscape.
The Tales of Xillia duology, in particular, has always held a special place in my heart due to its branching narrative, deep themes, and captivating characters. I fondly remember the countless hours spent making decisions that shaped the fate of the world in both games, and I eagerly await the day when they receive a remaster.
Moreover, the prospect of a Tales of Abyss remaster under the guidance of Yuki Ishikawa, producer of the upcoming Tales of Graces f Remastered, is particularly exciting. This game was my introduction to the series and remains one of my all-time favorites, with its memorable characters, emotional story, and innovative Free Run system.
Finally, while it might be a bit of a stretch, I can’t help but dream of a full remake for Tales of Legendia. Its unique Character Quest system and charming protagonist are still etched in my memory, but its aged gameplay mechanics leave much to be desired. A modernized version could breathe new life into this often overlooked gem and introduce it to a whole new generation of RPG fans.
To top it all off, I can’t help but wonder what kind of hilarious, tongue-in-cheek humor the Tales series would come up with if they ever decided to remaster one of their games in 3D chibi art style – now that would be a sight to behold!
In the realm of Role-Playing Games (RPGs), the Tales of franchise has earned a unique and significant position within the industry, celebrated for its captivating storytelling, unforgettable characters, and groundbreaking gameplay elements. From its modest start in 1995 with the release of Tales of Phantasia, this series has consistently attracted and retained the loyalty of its fans as well as those who are passionate about Japanese RPGs (JRPGs) with its frequently emotional storylines, distinctive visual style, and continually improving battle systems. As the Tales of series approaches its 30th anniversary, it’s worth noting that some of its earliest titles may be in line for a remastered version.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel thrilled by the news that Bandai Namco has kick-started the “Tales of Series Remaster Project.” Their goal is to breathe new life into many of our cherished titles from this series for today’s gaming enthusiasts. While there are numerous Tales of games deserving of a remaster, some truly shine above the rest as prime candidates for this treatment.
Tales of Games That Deserve a Remaster
Tales of Xillia and Its Sequel Are Most Worthy of a Remaster
Among all the “Tales” games yet to receive remastering, it’s widely agreed that “Tales of Xillia” and its sequel stand out as the most deserving. While not necessarily the best in the series, these two titles are significant for what they brought to the franchise. For instance, unlike many other games in the series, “Tales of Xillia” and “Tales of Xillia 2” delve into darker, more mature themes – a trend that has grown increasingly popular in modern gaming. Additionally, these games introduced the Dual Raid Linear Motion Battle System, which enables characters to synchronize attacks during combat, enhancing the strategic aspect of battles.
In addition to their engaging storylines, the games Tales of Xillia and Tales of Xillia 2 stand out by offering a narrative that changes based on player decisions, creating a more adaptable story compared to many other Tales series games. This feature is even more prominent in Tales of Xillia 2, which delves deeper into moral complexity and offers players tougher choices throughout the game’s narrative. It’s worth mentioning that both games are overdue for a remaster, so let’s hope they’re at the top of Bandai Namco’s to-do list!
Yuki Ishikawa Wants to Remaster Tales of the Abyss
As a long-term fan of the Tales of series, I wholeheartedly agree that Tales of the Abyss is more than worthy of a remaster. Having grown up playing this game and revisiting it multiple times over the years, I can confidently say that its captivating storyline, compelling characters, and immersive gameplay have stood the test of time. The fact that Yuki Ishikawa, producer of the upcoming Tales of Graces f Remastered, has expressed interest in leading a remake of Tales of the Abyss adds credence to the idea that we may see this beloved entry in the series get a much-deserved facelift soon. Given its enduring popularity among fans, it would be a missed opportunity not to remaster Tales of the Abyss, and I eagerly await any official announcement regarding its potential release.
In Tales of the Abyss, a new gameplay feature called Free Run was introduced, enabling players to move freely during battles. This innovative mechanic has since become synonymous with the series, showcasing the profound influence of Tales of the Abyss. From a storytelling perspective, the game delves into themes of self-discovery, fate, and atonement, while crafting compelling character arcs such as Luke fon Fabre’s. As a result, it ranks among the finest stories in the entire series. Additionally, Tales of the Abyss boasts one of the most memorable antagonists in the Tales of franchise. Regrettably, its graphics and performance have become outdated over time, making a remaster an essential update.
Tales of Legendia Could Actually Do With a Remake
Tales of Legendia, when compared to other Tales games, stands out as a candidate worthy of both a remaster and a full-scale remake. While a remaster could certainly boost its graphics, perhaps improve its sound, and make it more user-friendly for contemporary players, a complete overhaul might be more beneficial in the long run. The gameplay, particularly, has always needed a major update.
One of the strengths of Tales of Legendia is its Character Quest system, which offers supplementary storylines for the characters beyond the main narrative. However, its 2D Linear Motion Battle System was already outdated at the time of its launch, and would be a significant concern if not significantly improved in a remake.
Despite not requiring a complete overhaul, a revamped version of “Tales of Legendia” would significantly enhance the game due to its status as one of the less recognized titles in the “Tales” series, despite being among the stronger ones for its compelling protagonist and emotional narrative. By updating “Tales of Legendia”, we can make it more accessible to contemporary players, given that the original release dates back almost 20 years.
