As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I must say that the upcoming cozy game “Tales of the Shire” has piqued my interest like no other. Having played countless games, from the serene landscapes of Stardew Valley to the bustling streets of Animal Crossing, I can confidently say that this hobbit life simulator seems to be a breath of fresh air.

A well-designed comforting game typically offers a laid-back gaming atmosphere where players aren’t burdened by tight deadlines or stringent regulations. Just like the tranquil lifestyle of hobbits, the team behind Tales of the Shire aimed to create a stress-free environment for gamers to enjoy.

Consequently, the interior design approach in Tales of the Shire allows for unbridled creativity; players can adorn their hobbit homes without any grid constraints, placing nearly every item at their discretion, whether it be inside or outside. In an exclusive chat with Game Rant, designer Catherine Booth discussed the hurdles and victories they encountered while developing a gridless design system, aiming to provide maximum decorative freedom for players. She further revealed that she, along with the Weta Workshop team, are eager to witness the diverse decorative masterpieces players will create once the game is released.

How Tales of the Shire’s Hobbit Holes Provided Artistic Challenges

The design team found it tricky to make the hobbit holes in “Tales of the Shire” follow the traditional shape, as Hobbit holes are well-known for being round.

In Tales of the Shire, there’s an abundance of paintings and other decorative items for players to unveil, offering a multitude of customization options, including in unusual spaces. When questioned about difficulties encountered while designing a grid-free system, Booth emphasized the importance of ensuring that “wall hangings or items fit seamlessly onto the wall without passing through it,” considering that hobbit homes are circular in shape.

Tales of the Shire Players Can Truly Make Hobbit Holes Their Own

In their hobbit homes, players enjoy full flexibility over arranging their belongings. Upon observing fellow team members’ decorative selections and contrasting them with her own, Booth expressed it as if each game had its unique flavor. Without the restriction of a grid, players can place items almost anywhere, even stacking them on top of each other. This freedom allows Tales of the Shire hobbit holes to attain a messy yet cozy ambiance without descending into utter disarray.

Few items are specifically designed for either indoor or outdoor use, and those that are, like flowerbeds, are primarily due to practical constraints. In detailing the extensive customization options, Booth explained the flexibility players will enjoy when personalizing their homes in the Tales of the Shire‘s home decoration mode:

Feel free to take the majority of your belongings outdoors. We have both indoor and outdoor furniture available for you. Don’t forget about your deck chair and other items. It’s quite delightful when people experience that surprising moment of awe as they decorate indoors, only to discover they can easily move certain pieces outside too, like a rug.

Feel free to arrange items as you please, for instance, you might choose to sleep in the living room or even set up a table outdoors. The possibilities are endless!

As a fan, I can’t wait to delve into the immersive, sprawling decoration mode that “Tales of the Shire” promises when it launches. Weta Workshop’s unique take on home decoration sets it apart from previous charming games like “Animal Crossing” or “Stardew Valley.” I’m thrilled to see how players will craft their own, one-of-a-kind hobbit holes, contributing to the vivid depiction of one of fantasy literature’s most cherished settings—the cozy and inviting Shire.
