Summary
- Horror games can benefit from protagonists who speak, adding depth and immersion.
- Certain horror games like Days Gone and Resident Evil 4 execute talkative main characters well.
- Characters like Justine and Heather bring unique dialogue and atmosphere, enhancing the horror experience.
In many horror video games, the main character who the player controls is often either almost mute during their terrifying journey or completely silent throughout. However, it doesn’t have to be this way all the time. In fact, if the main character of a horror game is more chatty, they can become much more intriguing as characters. Moreover, having a talkative protagonist can make players feel less isolated because they know that their character isn’t the only one expressing fear in response to the unsettling events unfolding around them.
In many instances, it might be problematic for a main character in a horror game to talk extensively, as this could disrupt the atmosphere and suspense. However, if executed skillfully, such dialogue can make the protagonist more captivating and enjoyable to watch. Notably, several horror games have successfully achieved this balance, providing some of the most memorable experiences in the genre.
8. Days Gone
Deacon Is Always Ready To Give His Opinion On The Sad State Of The World Around Him
In the game ‘Days Gone’, character Deacon is never at a loss for words, whether it’s discussing town supplies, battling hordes of undead zombies, or chatting with friends over the radio. As you traverse the expansive game world, you’ll notice that Deacon sometimes talks to himself, pondering past experiences and attempting to grasp the reality of the zombie apocalypse he’s found himself in.
Since Deacon spends most of his journey through Oregon alone on his bike, making him a talkative character ensures that the lengthy rides never become monotonous or dull. Moreover, this trait provides players with a more profound understanding of Deacon’s personality and his perspective towards the world and the people around him in the post-apocalyptic setting.
7. The Walking Dead
Lee Can Always Be Found Chatting To People And Making New Allies To Keep Him And Clementine Safe
Although Lee was a criminal facing prison time just before the zombie apocalypse began, he doesn’t give off a villainous vibe. On the contrary, he is straightforward, honest, and easy to talk to, which allows him to communicate effectively with many people throughout The Walking Dead series, and forms deep connections during his journeys alongside Clementine, whom he’s ready to safeguard with all his might.
Considering that The Walking Dead is a Telltale game centered around decision-making that shapes the storyline, it’s understandable why Lee has a lot to say throughout the game. Fortunately, Dave Fennoy delivers such remarkable voice acting performance that Lee’s dialogue never becomes grating. On the contrary, it’s delightful discovering more about him and observing his interactions with the well-known characters who join him in his survival journey.
6. Amnesia: The Dark Descent (Justine)
Without Players Even Realizing It, Justine Has Been Narrating The Entire Journey In A Weird Roundabout Way
In “Amnesia: The Dark Descent,” a captivating side tale titled “Justine” begins by placing players in a dimly lit, grimy cell, with a voice coming from a speaker, chiding them. As players progress through each location, solving puzzles and stealthily evading the enigmatic Suitors, they will frequently hear this mysterious woman speaking to them during their journey.
Throughout this unfolding storyline, players remain clueless about whom they are controlling. It isn’t until the main character speaks for the first time near the end that they learn their character is Justine. Interestingly, her voice during gameplay mirrors the one that had been narrating the adventure up to this point. In a surprising revelation, players discover they have been manipulating Justine all along, who intentionally erased her own memories to participate in her sinister and macabre games. This explains why her voice echoes through the grim prison corridors, amplifying the game’s eerie vibe and ambiance.
5. Outlast 2
Blake Provides Some Intriguing Narration To His Uncomfortable Recordings
In the original “Outlast” game, Miles, the protagonist, remained silent for the most part, except for occasional grunts and screams, as he desperately sought to flee the terrifying Mount Massive Asylum, swarming with violent inmates. Contrastingly, Blake, who becomes the main character in the sequel, doesn’t shy away from expressing his thoughts on the disturbing sights and characters he encounters.
Following the recording of a video on the camcorder, players have the option to revisit it, with Blake offering a narrative of the story as it unfolds up until that point. He also adds some comments during particularly intense gameplay sequences. The horror game Outlast 2, known for being one of the scariest games in recent years, can be comforting to players knowing they have Blake’s voice for company throughout their journey.
4. Silent Hill 3
Heather Can’t Hold Her Tongue When She Sees Something Creepy Or Bizarre
Unlike James, who typically keeps his thoughts private and tends to be reserved, Heather, even at her young age in Silent Hill 3, is quite outspoken and impulsive. This openness, coupled with her memorable character design, is part of the reason why she has gained such a strong fan following within the series.
As a gamer named Heather, I won’t let characters like Claudia and Vincent boss me around. Instead, I stand up to them with my own witty remarks and questions, aiming to figure out why this game’s world is spiraling into chaos. While my voice may not be heard during item analysis, I still have plenty of comments to make as I traverse the game’s varied landscapes. My dialogue might seem strange or offbeat at times, but that doesn’t stop me from speaking up!
3. Resident Evil 4
No Matter How Terrifying Things Get, Leon Is Always Ready To Throw Out A Cheeky One-Liner
In the game titled “Resident Evil 4,” character Leon frequently encounters numerous grotesque creatures during his quest to save Ashley. Yet, this witty hero usually has a clever quip at the ready, either before or after defeating these foes permanently. Leon’s dialogue in “Resident Evil 4” infuses a touch of humor into the gameplay, yet there remains enough spooky adversaries and settings to maintain an eerie atmosphere when playing.
In Resident Evil 2, Leon was known for his chatty nature. To highlight his transformed action-cop persona in the fourth mainline game and its remake, Capcom added numerous additional lines for him. Remarkably, many of these lines continue to be referenced among fans, demonstrating that Leon’s remarks are not just insignificant filler but rather enduring catchphrases and quotes that have withstood the test of time.
2. Alan Wake 2
Alan And Saga Will Drop A Few Hints To Keep Players On Track
In a departure from conventional survival horror games, Alan Wake 2 offers a remarkably original horror experience with numerous intricate systems and mechanics that keep gameplay fresh. Despite its innovative elements, the game presents a significant challenge to players throughout. To aid navigation and understanding, characters like Saga and Alan offer hints and comments at regular intervals within each chapter.
As I delve into Saga’s Mind Place, a hub where clues gathered throughout the game are meticulously pinned on a colossal crime board, Saga occasionally shares her insights and viewpoints, making me feel like we’re working together to unravel this mystery. It’s comforting to know when they need to remain silent to heighten the chilling atmosphere, but their frequent discussions make the experience all the more engaging.
1. Dead Space Remake
Allowing Isaac To React To His Situation Makes Him More Believable And Realistic As A Character
In the original version of the terrifying survival horror game, Dead Space, Isaac was portrayed as a silent protagonist – a decision by the developers that stirred up debate among players. Some appreciated this aspect, arguing it increased immersion, while others wished they could hear Isaac’s thoughts about the Ishimura’s condition and whether his girlfriend, Nicole, might still be alive. For the remake of Dead Space, the developers have given Isaac the ability to communicate during both cutscenes and combat situations, offering players a new perspective on his character.
Watching Isaac stand up against Hammond and Kendra when they act shady makes him appear more genuine and captivating as a character. Isaac’s new ability to speak adds depth to his character, particularly as he gets too near the Marker and begins to mumble incoherently, showing the corruption of his mind. The Dead Space remake is a terrifying horror game with numerous fearsome adversaries, stunning visuals, and an abundance of weapon choices. However, giving Isaac a voice and making him speak frequently is one of its most notable improvements.
