As the highly anticipated expansion for the Pokemon TCG Pocket, called Extradimensional Crisis, is about to hit stores within a few days, we’re all eager to discover how the metagame will evolve once the freshly unveiled cards start making their debut. Although Guzzlord EX might become the next dominant card in Pokemon TCG Pocket due to its ability to counter Giratina EX effectively through both type advantage and Grindcore attack, other Ex cards arriving with Extradimensional Crisis will need to demonstrate their worth first.

Buzzwole EX boasts a powerful attack that inflicts 120 damage using only three Energy, but it comes with a catch. This is not the only Ex card in the new set that seems less than perfect for its particular type.

It’s no secret that certain Pokemon TCG Pocket types have historically been more advantageous than others, such as Psychic, Grass, Water, and Fire, which have consistently received strong cards. However, other types haven’t fared as well, with Lightning being one of them and currently sitting near the bottom due to the scarcity of powerful cards released for it. The upcoming Tapu Koko EX may not provide the boost that its type desperately needs.

Pokemon TCG Pocket’s Tapu Koko Ex May Add Insult to Injury to Lightning Decks

In the game of Pokémon TCG, the expansion set titled “Extradimensional Crisis” will primarily revolve around Ultra Beasts, yet other fascinating creatures are also expected to make an appearance, as demonstrated by Tapu Koko EX. Since the Celestial Guardians set introduced the four Tapus in their standard card form and each of them received an Illustration Rare version, it’s logical that “Extradimensional Crisis” would add them as EX cards – specifically Tapu Koko, given its significance in the Pokémon lore. However, the challenge lies in the fact that Lightning decks in the Pokemon TCG Pocket have been underperforming for a while now, and while Tapu Koko EX is a welcome addition, it might not be enough to invigorate the type.

This is due to the fact that the latest sets have introduced Ex cards for Lightning, but they haven’t been overly powerful compared to those of other types. As a result, Lightning decks are either relying on old favorites or becoming ineffective. For instance, one might say that the most effective Lightning card in the Pokémon TCG Pocket is Magnezone from Space-Time Smackdown, which is nearly four sets old, and it’s just a rare. Similarly, Pikachu Ex from Genetic Apex and the more recent version in Shining Revelry struggle against current meta threats because they are either too slow or too weak, and Tapu Koko Ex appears to face similar difficulties.

Why Tapu Koko Ex Won’t Make Lightning Decks Meta in Pokemon TCG Pocket

In the game Extradimensional Crisis, Tapu Koko EX boasts a total of 130 Hit Points (HP). It doesn’t have any special abilities, but it does possess two unique attacks. The first attack requires one Energy and inflicts 20 points of damage, while also providing Tapu Koko EX with an additional Lightning Energy. The second attack demands three Energy and is prepared to strike on the second or third turn, depending on whether the player goes first or second. However, it only administers 90 points of damage.

In the current game scenario, Tapu Koko Ex card lacks significant impact due to its vulnerability to a single hit from Giratina Ex in Pokemon TCG Pocket, and its damage output being insufficient to eliminate major opponents. Consequently, its presence on the battlefield is likely to be fleeting, with it only managing two attacks at most before getting knocked out. Similarly to Pikachu Ex, it doesn’t seem to bring much advantage to Lightning decks in terms of performance.

Tapu Koko Ex is Not in Good Company in Pokemon TCG Pocket’s New Set

In the trailer for Extradimensional Crisis, another Ultra Beast card for the Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket edition was unveiled – this time featuring Xurkitree, a new Lightning-type card. However, much like its predecessors, Xurkitree’s 3-Energy attack for 60 doesn’t appear to bring anything revolutionary to the table. Consequently, it seems that while the meta of Pokemon TCG Pocket might shift soon, Extradimensional Crisis may not be a particularly exciting addition for Lightning enthusiasts unless it introduces some standout, game-changing cards.
