Team Cherry shares a glimpse into their seven-year journey in creating “Hollow Knight: Silksong”, the most eagerly awaited independent game of 2025. Excited fans won’t have to hold out much longer as a release date for “Hollow Knight: Silksong” has been announced, and they can expect to play it just two weeks from now. This sequel to the 2017 indie sensation, “Hollow Knight”, is sure to deliver an unforgettable experience.
It’s been a while since the announcement of “Hollow Knight: Silksong”. Initially planned as downloadable content for the original “Hollow Knight”, it eventually expanded into its own standalone game, similar to Ubisoft’s “Assassin’s Creed Mirage” and Techland’s upcoming “Dying Light: The Beast”. This is more common among AAA gaming franchises, but it’s less frequent within the independent gaming sphere. At Xbox’s 2022 summer showcase, we were told that “Silksong” would be out before June 2023. However, two years passed without a release, leaving fans surprised when Team Cherry recently confirmed the game’s launch date.
Hollow Knight: Silksong’s Development Was Surprisingly Smooth
In an unexpected twist, the extended development time for “Hollow Knight: Silksong,” as shared by Team Cherry Co-Founders Ari Gibson and William Pellen in an interview with Bloomberg, wasn’t due to obstacles or delays but rather from their sheer enjoyment of creating new elements for the game. Gibson even admitted that at some point he had to halt his brainstorming sessions to avoid a 15-year long development process, attributing the lengthy period to being a small team and the time-consuming nature of game development.

It’s heartening to learn about the smooth sailing of the seven-year development process for the upcoming title, Silksong, in contrast to the typical challenges often faced in video game production. The developer, Gibson, had to hold back from putting in more work on the game, a sign that fans eagerly anticipating Hollow Knight: Silksong can expect a grand scale and scope from this sequel. It’s been confirmed that Silksong will be larger than its predecessor, featuring several distinct hub areas as opposed to the single world of Hollow Knight.

Things were never stagnant; they were consistently moving forward. However, being a compact team meant games demanded considerable time and effort, which eventually led me to halt my sketches. It became evident that if I didn’t pause drawing, the completion of the project would extend over 15 years.
Team Cherry’s meticulous approach to crafting quality and polish makes their upcoming indie game this year one of the most anticipated titles among fans. With Gibson indicating that he could have continued developing Silksong, it seems likely that there will be numerous expansions for the game in the future, which is great news for fans of Hollow Knight. For now, we’ll have to wait until September 4 when Hollow Knight: Silksong releases on PC and console.
