As a die-hard fan, I can hardly contain my excitement as we’re just a few weeks away from the long-anticipated release of Dying Light: The Beast! Often referred to as Dying Light 3 by many, even Techland’s franchise director, this game marks an extraordinary evolution in the decade-old zombie apocalypse series. I can hardly wait to reunite with Kyle Crane, a character last seen in the first game that premiered back in 2015. Here’s hoping it delivers another heart-pounding experience!
In a recent blog post, Techland outlined the transformation of the character Kyle Crane from Dying Light (2015) to Dying Light: The Beast. As time has passed, Crane has undergone significant changes, now appearing in a rougher, more animalistic form to players – yet he retains his handsome appearance and continues to be an attractive character.
Why?
Crane Is No Old Man
On the Pilgrim Outpost’s recent post, Techland clarified that they intentionally designed Kyle Crane in Dying Light: The Beast to avoid portraying him as a senior citizen.
During our trials, we found that certain details such as gray hair or baldness didn’t align with our vision of him. These features made him appear less like the hero we intended him to be or caused him to feel disconnected from himself.
Although this might be disheartening for those with gray hair or baldness, it clearly shows an intention to keep the character, Kyle Crane, looking youthful and vigorous. This intent is quite obvious in the latest images shared by the team, as if they were torn from a calendar featuring our hero, Kyle Crane.
In the words of Techland’s artistic professionals, creating the new Kyle Crane involved mirroring the prolonged torment inflicted upon him by his captors over more than a decade.
The model underwent numerous updates before achieving an appearance that felt genuine, as our aim was to portray the physical and emotional toll of over a decade of imprisonment and torture on him. His body bears visible signs of the experiments inflicted upon him, and we meticulously considered the types of experiments he might have endured and the resulting marks they would cause, rather than creating arbitrary wounds.
The details, from Crane’s eye color to his arm veins, have been meticulously designed in The Beast character model to embody the updated version of this iconic character, brilliantly brought to life by Roger Craig Smith. This character design showcases a ‘duality’, subtly indicating that there remains a human aspect within the ferocious character portrayed by Kyle Crane.
In the course of the game, Techland indicates that the character Kyle Crane undergoes development, gradually shedding his monstrous traits as the narrative progresses. As he breaks free from his tormentors, finds remnants of his past self, and metes out vengeance, he becomes less menacing and more recognizably human again.
Dying Light: The Beast is coming out globally on September 19th! I’m thinking about getting it myself, what do you think? Feel free to share your thoughts on TopMob forum!
