As a long-time fan of the Tekken series, I was absolutely blown away by the surprise announcement of Heihachi Mishima’s return in Tekken 8 during the Evo 2024 tournament. His dramatic resurrection in the fiery trailer had me on the edge of my seat and left me feeling a mix of excitement and disbelief.

At the 2024 Evo tournament in Las Vegas, Tekken 8’s producer and director Katsuhiro Harada announced on stage that Heihachi Mishima would make a comeback as a downloadable fighter for the game, available in the fall. Previously, Harada had confirmed that Heihachi had met his end. However, the head of the Mishima clan surprised Tekken 8 fans with his reappearance in an explosive trailer, leaving players around the world in awe.

In the world of Tekken, Heihachi Mishima holds a significant role as a primary adversary. He is not only Kazuya Mishima’s father but also Jin Kazama’s grandfather. Formerly the head of Mishima Zaibatsu, a global corporation, Heihachi played a crucial part in establishing the King of Iron Fist tournaments, granting ownership to the triumphant fighters. Though he was a hero in Tekken 2, his antagonistic actions dominated most of the series. In Tekken 7, Heihachi engaged Kazuya in a final confrontation atop an erupting volcano. After an intense battle, Kazuya summoned his demonic abilities to defeat his father and callously threw Heihachi’s body into the fiery crater.

Harada had earlier announced that Heihachi Mishima perished in Tekken 7, but this turn out to be short-lived. At Evo 2024 in Las Vegas during the finals of Tekken 8, Harada made a surprise appearance on stage, unveiling the next DLC fighter through a trailer for Tekken 8. The three-minute long video opened with Mishima Zaibatsu warrior monks being defeated by an unknown attacker. Wearing a white tiger mask to hide his identity, Heihachi was the one wreaking havoc in the trailer. Characters like Eddy Gordo and Lidia Sobieska were also featured before the scene closed with a shot of the volcano into which Heihachi was thrown.

Tekken 8 Reveals Heihachi Mishima’s Return

As Heihachi departed the blazing scene, his ominous smile remained, along with his unique mustache and hairdo. Harada announced that fans could anticipate Heihachi’s return in Tekken 8‘s DLC fighter lineup come fall 2024. Simultaneously, Lidia Sobieska was slated for release on July 25 across all gaming platforms, with early access available two days earlier.

Harada announced that players can enjoy a fresh stage and photo mode as extra features in the free update 1.06 for “Tekken 8,” which goes live together with Lidia’s arrival. With “Tekken 8” partnering up with Nike for this new collaboration and Heihachi making his comeback, it remains to be seen how Bandai Namco will keep the excitement high throughout the year 2024.
